A Minecraft Server has been opened that has several events available to celebrate 5 Years VideoGameGeek. We intend to leave the server running after the events are over, as long as there are players who enjoy being on it.

The server's IP address is 46.105.100.91:25571. You can find more information on the server and events on the Wiki page that we started: https://videogamegeek.com/wiki/page/VGG-5_Minecraft.

You need to get whitelisted to connect to the server. To get whitelisted, post in this thread (the mods will be watching it) and tell us your Minecraft name. The server is meant for active VGG members, who can be trusted to leave the world intact and not mess with other players -- we want the server to be a friendly environment where players find fun in building and cooperating with other players, rather than griefing. We therefore can't just whitelist anybody, but if in doubt, contact us.

The two main rules for the server are:
1. Don't excavate or build in the Events Area!
2. Be a friendly player!

The Events Area is the area surrounded by a brick wall that runs from X=400, Z=550 to X=-400, Z=-350 (you can see your coordinates when you press F3). You start the game in the Events Area.

Note that you can build in the Events Area while doing some of the events, e.g., if you need to build a quick lodge to spend the night, or need to build a bridge or ladders to get across something, that's okay. Just don't start building player homes in the Events Area or start excavating big chunks, because that might interfere with the events.

Events found on the server are:
* Hunting the Ender Dragon (in August)
* Treasure Hunt (ready)
* Challenge Cube (ready)
* Nether Coaster (ready)
* Building a Monument (needs planning)

Links to geeklists and threads supplied above.

Note that this is the first time that we are running a Minecraft server, so we expect there to be some glitches. We'll try to solve those as soon as we know about them.

Happy playing!

Wow, that sounds awesome. Haven't played Minecraft in a while, and after Terraria and Starbound might feel completely different.

But I sure would like to give it a try.
Name is, as always, Astartus

Well, I'll poke around a bit. We'll have to see how my rotten internet handles it. Whitelist Norkom.

That should be it sorted now. I've updated the whitelist and restarted the server.

Pieter - adding names in Multicraft didn't seem to update the whitelist. Best to do it ingame.

Oh, now I remember -- you have to restart the server after whitelisting people.

I think it would say LJDPC for his user name, then.

Thanks!

That's LJDPC added to the whitelist. Let me know if he can't get in. I didn't restart the server as there are a few people in there at the moment but I think I've managed to get around that.

The current status of the world is displayed above.

You see the wall surrounding the events area. In the north (which is the top-left corner of the image) is my home (reasonably complete, as I have had several days to work on it), and in the south-west you can spot Norkom's home. I don't see any other players having homes yet.

I don't think anybody is currently interested in working on the Treasure Hunt or trying to solve the Cube, though one player seems to have climbed on top of the Cube (but there is nothing there, I know). Maybe I was a bit overly optimistic in setting those up, but since we intend to leave the world running for as long as players are interested in playing, I guess there is still a lot of time left.

If somebody is interested in getting the "on a rail" achievement, this is how you get it: first go to north-west station and pull the lever next to the stop on the track. This disables the stop. Then take the Nether Network to my home. On the bottom floor you find an access to the railroad. Put a minecart on it, and push the button to start traveling. You will ride the railroad past north-west station and will stop at south-west station. You will get the achievement a few blocks before reaching south-west station. After that, take the Nether Network to north-west station again and pull the lever once more to re-activate the stop. (Note that you need the "acquire hardware" achievement before you can get "on the rail").

I'll explain that stuff to my son, Logan. Hopefully he won't wreck anything or break any rules. If he does, I can assure you that it's almost certainly not on purpose on his part.

As long as he does not mess with other players' buildings and doesn't create a home or deep mine in the Events Area, it should be fine. I don't mind people exploring the Events Area and building a small lodge to spend the night, or get some stone or wood or coal if they spot it. But no big excavations and no permanent player homes at this time.
