I'm having people over and I was thinking of buying a new game. These are a mix of somewhat beginners (people who can handle Catan), my wife and I (who can handle anything up to 4.0 weight) and a newbie, who we don't want to terrify.

Yeah, yeah, Catan, I have Catan, Catan is fine. But is there something better? Like maybe Splendor but requiring a few more brain cells? I don't want to be bored but I don't want to scare the new guy (his husband plays more serious games, him, not at all).

Remember, 5 players.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

For a long time, my go-to game for new players was Samarkand by Sid Sackson. We eventually tired of it, but it was a fantastic gateway game. I do wish I'd still kept it. I don't think it's easily obtainable anymore though.

Yes to Ticket to Ride.

Is 7 Wonders too scary due to the icons and complexity?

Cosmic Encounter has been a hit at every gathering I have had among gamers and non-gamers alike. You would also be introducing them to a stone cold classic of tabletop gaming. The base game plays up to five.

Deep Sea Adventure- Good press your luck with lots of cheering and groans.
Puerto Rico- Easy to grasp but in depth game play, but exp. player let the newbs make their own moves even if they are bad and offer constructive ideas after so they don't get a complex.
7 Wonders-1st game newbs are confused but 2nd game they are hooked

Also recommend

Ginkgopolis, Hacienda, and Spyrium

For a quicker game I would recommend Fleet + Fleet: Arctic Bounty

Alien Frontiers: Outer Belt would be a great addition to your (very nice) collection.

I was going to suggest El Grande as well. Depends on how the group feels about direct confrontation.

And it's hard to resist The Princes of Florence. Yes, it's a deep game which rewards multiple plays. But it also plays well with relatively inexperienced gamers as it is clear what you are trying to do, just not clear as to how to do it maximally effectively.

I would suggest getting the alvin and dexter expansion for ticket to ride. It adds a little strategy that the game lacks when you aren't lucky enough to get the cards you need.

And some day you just don't get the cards....

If you don't foresee any alpha-gamer problems, Forbidden Desert seems like it would be a good fit. Not too complicated, fun theme, and you can all work together. Plus it's cheap!

Newbie? forget brain cells, not the focus in such a case.

Many great suggestions:

yes to TTR, KoT, Bohnanza (definetely!), Hanabi (hello brain cells), Dixit, Fir Sale (definetely!), Timeline

Depends: Sheriff of Nottingham (if lying is okay), Sushi Go! (kinda boring, but hey, it is inoffensive and cute), Turn the tide - actually best at 5, great with newbies, kinda long at 5 but manageable [your collection] Acquire? (seems newbie friendly actually), Roborally (haven't tried with newbies, might work), Discworld (?),

probebly not: 7 Wonders (icons confuse newbies to gaming, totally, and they drown, proceed with cautious), Cosmic Encounter (probably not, too rules heavy upfront), El grande (unforgiving, heavy, confuses players in first game)

Hanabi is a great option.

Kigi, too.

If you want more of a board game, I'd probably say Dark Minions.

In addition to handling 5 players, Cartagena is one I purposely use to instroduce non-gamers. Unfortunately it has also become harder to find so you might switch to Cartagena 2. The Pirate's Nest, whis is similar with an extra twist.

An unusual alternative is Santiago. The rules are simple enough for placing tiles on the board for scorng but the player interaction required at the start each round may take a little adjustment.

But I'd certainly rather do either one than 5-player Catan.
