A pair of barn swallows have just finished raising a brood of four outside my front door! It was fun to watch them grow up.

In the last few days, the smallest of the brood spent two days at the nest while the siblings got a taste of the wild blue yonder. Finally, one of their number "came back" for him on Monday afternoon and they all spent that night somewhere else. Tonight, three of the juveniles and one of the parents are back!

Why would they do that? Or is that normal behavior?

You expect us to believe that his family just abandoned him for two days? I find that difficult to swallow.

That's exactly how my birds acted this year. Everyone came back there were four in the antlers and two on the house. Birds love my house.

That's what we call in Texas "an annoyance of grackles."
