They don't, or at least they didn't.

Imo, you only need to purchase up front if you go early on Thursday, since the queueing will be even worse if you don't have a ticket already. Or if you want to get it out of the way.

We usually buy tickets at the door, but this year we'll try to be there opening thursday morning, so seemed better to order tickets now.

Strangely, buying your ticket in Essen seems to be 2€ cheaper, than preordering [e.g. 11.50/13.50 for a regular daily ticket]

Or if you want to buy a ticket which allows the use of public transport [which costs 2€ more].

afaik that has always been the case - and if you were there for the big queue-up of 2011 (?) you'll happily pay the no-queue tax.
