During your turn you place planks or meeples on the board. They must be placed balanced and stable.

If your meeple or plank falls later in the game, it return to the starting island (meeple) or it's removed from the game (plank). Even if it falls during another player's turn: you are responsible for placing it balanced and stable. That's how we played.

Is this correct? Are there dexterity rules in the game?

We play without the dexterity element.

I just can't see how these can be checked when planks are constantly placed en removed by different players.
I also don't think this is the essence of the game.

There are no dexterity rules in this game. I try to make this clear when I teach it: there is an element of spatial reasoning and estimation, but if something falls down, just reconstruct it.

There's nothing wrong with house rules adding a dexterity element, but it's clear (from the lack of penalties being outlined in the rules) that this was not the design intent.
