I wanted to share my efforts to create painted 3D components for all the characters and generic tokens in this game.

If you haven't seen the game yet, it comes with a pre-painted figure for each of the 4 leaders and everything else is represented by specific or generic cardboard chits. Although the Leader pre-paints are pretty decent actually, since I was doing everything else from scratch, I replaced them with figures that I like a little bit better (even though I didn't have to).

This game really needs a bit of love to make it pop 3D style.

Most of the Heroes and Mission Characters already existed in Heroclix form, while less than half of the Students actually existed.
When a figure didn't exist or was too expensive (Doop), I created one by cutting and gluing and painting.

The Missions use mission tokens to represent the characters your team will be fighting, such as: Capt. America, Hulk, a set of 5 Anti-Mutant Fanatics, a set of 12 people suffering from the Techno-Virus, a set of 6 crates with a bomb in one, a newly found Mutant going crazy that the players have to subdue (I used Rachel Summers/Hound for that), 4 Sentinels, 1 Hellfire Sentinel (more powerful than the other 4), Apocolypse, Onlsaught, and Mr. Sinister.
I thought the generic round chits were pretty boring, so I replaced them with 3d figures and gave them different base colors to tell them apart.

I'll start with the Overview picture of everything, then do a section on Leaders, Heroes, Students, Mission Characters, and then a few Fight Scenes and a replacement Mission Commander figure - just for fun.

Overview:

Leaders:

Heroes:

Students:

Mission Characters:

Fight Scenes:

Sorry...I've heard of heroclix but not familiar with the collection of them. Did you buy these as standalone or got them randomly in packs? Did they come from one particular set?

Heroclix have many, many sets. There is a DC comics based line with about 2 dozen different sets, a Marvel comics based line with about 2 dozen sets, and many independent sets like Halo, LoTR, etc.

I picked and chose from many different sets.

The older set figures were glued to the base in a way that makes them slightly difficult to pop off their dial bases, with little round plastic discs under their feet. I just pop those off with an exacto knife when rebasing them.

The medium-old set figures have a "platform" that they are on that is glued to the base and is sometimes extremely hard to get off of the dial. I have to work at some of those with an exacto knife very carefully, sawing this way and that way and finally am able to pop those off.

The newest set figures are on what they call an Oreo Cookie type base and while they do have a platform under their feet, it pops on and off with just a little pressure.

When I rebased my figures I left the "discs" and "platforms" under their feet and glued those to new bases and painted over everything. It is a lot harder to trim those off and get the tiny little feet to stick to the new bases (much less contact surface for gluing). I have done so in other pimping projects with fewer figures, but didn't feel it was necessary on this project.

In any case, you can go to Coolstuffinc.com and click on Miniatures on the menu to the left and then Heroclix, and then you can see most of the available sets and look through them.

I had to look through hundreds and hundreds of figures to find the ones I wanted. I already had a tub of a couple hundred figures - you can buy them in huge lots off ebay and at conventions for about .25c a piece or even less - for the majority of older figures out there.

I pulled as many as I could from the "cheapo bin", but had to pay a bit more for others, to get the "perfect figure" - many of the small figures I had to buy individually were anywhere from $1 to $3 or $4, with the occasional figure costing more - depending on the set, paint job, pose, etc.

I tried not to spend more than $10 on any single figure, which ruled out cool Nightcrawler and Doop convention exclusive figures, so I made my own for those guys.

I did however spend about $20 each on some of the larger figures like all the Sentinels and Apocalypse and Onslaught. I bought some of those off Coolstuff and some off ebay.

The M.O.D.A.M. figure that I used to replace the Mission Commander token was about $12. I don't know if that was the most appropriate choice, but I was and still am at a loss to think of something better - and he is pretty cool looking - huge brain and command-type chair. He makes me laugh every time I look at him.

For the Mission Commander, what about Professor X?

Edit: I guess apparently he's dead in this setting or something? I don't really follow the comics.

It's just like in Spartacus, when someone gets the Host token.

I created 4" Caesar figure to use in Spartacus instead of the host token because its big and cool.

To represent the "Host" aka "Mission Commander" in this game ... you would need something big ... like Cerebro or a Quin-Jet or a big computer console I guess.
Prof. X isn't in this game ... the Mission Commander is going to be one of the 4 Team Leaders (Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, or Magneto) ...

so what would be about the sized of 12 oz coke can and represent that one of those Team Leaders was the current Mission Commander aka Host?

I am at a loss right now, so just using M.O.D.A.M. until I figure out something better...

Maybe there is some action figure that comes with a computer console I could hi-jack...

I really wish Heroclix would've made all of the characters that we are lacking in this game. But I really like your custom minis.

I have a lot of Heroclix too. It's a pretty fun game, and it would be neat to use them in this game.

Anyway, very cool. Thanks for sharing :)

EDIT: Oh and I agree about Coolstuffinc.com. That's where I buy my Heroclix. They aren't too expensive and you get a discount if you buy from them on a regular basis.

Just curious, base game included, how much would you estimate you spent on the whole transformation?

Thanks!

I spent only about a dollar a figure except for a few that were so cool I didn't mind paying 4 or 5 dollars for.

There were some amazing minis in the 20 to 30 dollar range that I was not about to buy - like Doop.

The big bad guys were probably the big expense - those were a bit pricey and there weren't a lot of substitutes available.

I probably only spent about $150 on the whole thing, but I had to put a LOT of time in while making the figures that didn't exist that I had to kitbash and paint.

edit: oh including the base game ... that adds another 30 bucks or so ... and then I had to buy some sets of X-Men comics so I could figure out who some of those newer characters were like Primal ...
so with the research comics and base game maybe more like $250.
