The concept of finding an item is good, but doesn't really work out well in the game as written. We play with the following rule: when you roll a star, pull out a tile as normal. Then ALL players scan the board looking for the item on the tile. As each player finds it they say "found" but do not indicate which room it is in. When the active player (the one who rolled the star) finds the object, then the search is finished, and she indicates the room (just to keep everyone honest). The active player now moves her Madeline forward X star spaces, based on where she ranked in locating the room. In the attic (where there are no stars) you count the white spaces when you move forward X. The value of X is one plus the number of players that the active player beat in finding the object; so for example, in a 4 player game, if the active player is the third one to find the item, she moves her Madeline forward (1 + 1) to the second star space in front of her current position. This does give a slight edge to players who roll more stars; if this bothers you, you could use a formula like "number of players that the active player beat in finding the object minus one", but really, you are probably playing the wrong game
We do not allow a player to win by rolling a star and moving to the final white space if they were the last one to spot the object: you gotta beat someone to win the game!
