Hi, guys!

So, last night we were playing a Smash Up session and in the last moment we found ourselves in a confusing situation awarding VPs scoring a base.

Two players tied in first place, another players was the runner up and a last minute Shinobi made a forth player the third in the base. The rules say that in case of a first place tie, the runner up gets points equal to the third place.
But, what happens when the player that plays Shinobi gets third place? Does the runner up gets the second place points and the forth player gets the third? or, does the runner up gets the third place and the Shinobi player doesn´t get any points?
The example given in the rules puts a 3 players situation in a tie, but it´s no really clear what happens when there is 4 players.

Thank you guys!

Tie for first place both get 1st place points.
No one gets 2nd place points.
Runner up gets 3rd place points.
Mr. Shinobi gets 0.

The rules do address this (sort of):

If two players tie for runner up, no one gets third place. Harsh.

"If players are tied on a base, all involved players get points for the best position they tied for."

My interpretation of this is that in the case of ties, award the points for the highest award your could've received. This simply means that if the people ahead of you had not tied, and had a number in between the tie and yours, would you still qualify for points? If so, you get points, if not, no.

EDIT: A way to think of it could be that when there's a tie the next tier down gets absorbed into the higher reward so it's no longer an option.

Examples of 4 player base ties: I've highlighted no-vp rewarded in red for both the player and the slot.
Scenario = VP slots rewarded for ties
------------------------------------------
Tie for First (9,9,5,3) = First x 2, Second, Third.
Tie for Runner-Up (9,6,6,3) = First, Second x 2, Third.
Tie for Third (10,8,3,3) = First, Second, Third x 2.
Tie for First + Runner-Up (8,8,5,5) = First x 2, Second, Third x 2.
Three-way Tie for First (8,8,8,3) = First x 3, Second, Third.
Three-way Tie for Runner-Up (12,4,4,4)= First, Second x 3, Third.

It should be noted in 1,2,3 player games this is a non-issue because there is always the opportunity to get 3 total VP rewards from a base.

Lots of great examples! thanks!
