had a thread that got many of us thinking, so why not try the inverse:

What at-a-glance criteria will get you to either investigate a game or just auto-add it onto your 'interested' list?

Obviously there are a couple of designers/publishers that auto go on my list (Splotter, Winsome, et al). Things like 150+ Minute play times, unique, odd themes, and "economic" will all cause me to further investigate.

What about y'all?

Perhaps I'm shallow,

Name of Game
Box Cover Art
Theme
Price

Mentioned on Podcast I listen to.
Is on the hotness
Is highly ranked

These are the triggers that will often get me to investigate a game.
For Example, "Deck Building the Deck Building Game" was mentioned half seriously on a pod-cast. I have a soft spot for humor in games. I have done some research for this game based on the name alone. No in-game humor, but looks like a decent game at a low price point.

Really the only thing would be the designer. After that a review from a respected source. I avoid the "cult of the new" and could care less to be first or whatever...

2-4 or 2-5 players. I like mostly Euros and anything outside that range (except I guess 1-5) indicates that it's either not going to see play in my two-person household or that it's a party game.

Splotter and Uwe Rosenberg are my two insta-wishlist triggers.

Things like economic games, with pick up and deliver, that play with 2p will get a look, but are not automatic.

I give strong automatic consideration to:

- expansions or new versions of games I've already rated 7+
- nostalgic stuff from the 70s/80s
- lots of little plastic dudes on a map
- inexpensive well-sculpted miniatures of uncommon things

Solo playable. I really enjoy playing a few of the games in my collection solo (like Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game) however this is not why I like to see a game is possible solo.

Most games I play with my gaming group involve at least one person new to any game we play. So there nearly always needs to be a rules teacher. If it's a brand new game I will of course read the manual, but depending on how the game was acquired, I'll also watch a youtube explanation and maybe even a play-through. However, not all games have these resources. In these instances I'll sit down and play through a game myself first.

Obviously you can play any game on your own, but it's less exciting if it's not designed for it. So if it has a way of playing solo it makes it much easier for me to learn to teach, then I'm more likely to want to get it to the table and therefore it's more likely to get played and more worthwhile for me to consider.

If it was designed by Eric M. Lang, it's an auto-buy for me. So far, he has only let me down once, with the 4-player Kaosball... The 2-player version I cannot try, because my gaming friends don't want to, after the 4-player fiasco

Other than that it's:
- theme
- miniatures
- ameritrash
- sci-fi

Anything by Knizia and Feld will immediately get additional looks and consideration....

Also, any full game (card, board or dice) below $9.99 will get a look and the accompanying rationalization of: "for under $10, how bad can it be..." or "that's less than the price of a movie ticket, even if in only play it once! it will be worth it...", and if it comes in a small box, "plus, it will hardly take up any space on my game shelf..."

Specific designers make my add list for a variety of reasons. Martin Wallace and Stefan Feld because my wife seems to love everything that they make. I will always make up reasons to purchase my next Uwe Rosenberg. As for mechanics it is all about the same of what was stated earlier: Engine Building, Resource Production, Area Control and so on. I would be one of the first to pick up "Trading in the Mediterranean" if they could ever find a publisher.

Fair, but if I see a well regarded game with that cheesy art then that game has my attention immediately. Now I love that art. Probably because I love the game and now I associate the two but still.

I don't deviate from most replying here. The shallow aspects of good artwork, intriguing title, a theme I'm interested in will get me to pick the box off the shelf for further investigation. After that, there are a few designers I'm developing an affinity for, gamer mechanics I like, then time/complexity constraints and price. Like PJ earlier, remakes of older games from my first go-round with gaming get a look to see where things have gone.
