I don't like it. As the board is always the same regardless of the number of players, the game really needs four. Even with three players, I think there is too much space and it feels a bit loose.

I would suggest to use only half board, but its design does not help.
Looking at the board you could try to use only central rooms, exluding all the rooms that touch the external perimeter.
Adding one or two rooms, eventually.

More players is more chaos as well as the fun of alliances etc. With 2 players there is more space allowing for more burn through the cards with less repurcusions. This makes for closer shorter games. The ability to read one opponent is also a factor in increasing the strategy turn by turn, although the card draw mechanic mitigates this to a degree. It is certainly no game of chess but it is a light and pretty quick 2 player game that holds up as fun. Dont expect a glorious Lotr Confrontation but it doesnt outstay its welcome either.

I've played with 2, 3, and 4 players. I've played 2 players with three different opponents. We always had fun.
