A book title for me droog. Read to us in 4th grade. Thus, not published after about 1982. The recollections are thus:
A kid lives on a farm.
The farm is in the northern parts of the Midwest US: Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas.
The kid's father is incapacitated or absent.
A bear is menacing. This is the main plot.

Was it:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Biggest-Bear-Lynd-Ward/dp/03951502...

Mountain farmboy Johnny wants a prize bearskin and finds a cub instead. At home when the maple sugar eating and chicken scaring habits of the grown bear increase, Johnny must take him away to shoot him but fortunately they fall into a life saving trap set by a zoo out-fit. A pat, two- lines-a-page text brings smiles but it is Mr. Ward's large soft black drawings of anxious Johnny and an imposing, bewildered hulk of bruin that really rouse the laughs.

Talk about a flash back. In the 80s I was dating an elementary school teacher. She read the book you describe to her class. I remember her telling me what the book she was reading to her class was about. Unfortunately I don't remember the title but my understanding was it was a popular title to read to elementary school kids at that time.

The book read to us when I was in 4th grade (early 70s) that sticks with me to this day is Where the Red Fern Grows. Likely the book helped spark my interest in reading which started at that age. Was about a boy and his two hunting dogs.

In the 80's I had already been working for a number of years.

Could YOU have that 'bear' verify whether or naught the POPE also: "shat within the woods"; and does this critter also have a 'funny-shaped hat'? 'Round' isn't considered such, yet adorned with a couple of 'doughnuts' sufficed.

Heh, my [redacted]night wrapped up at about 1AM, and I told my friend that BGG would provide an answer within 30 minutes. I am so, so disappoint.

Thank you for your answer, but in researching that book it's def not correct. That one is a picture book for the little'uns. The book I'm looking for would be a short novel (judging by the other books read to us at that time).

Thank you for posting your memories. "Red Fern" is a good one, in the genre of sad dog novels. I recently read "Old Yeller" to my girls. Hell of a book. Absolutely beautiful.

Based on your description, which also sparked my memory as I read this one aloud to my kids about 7-8 years ago, I am guessing you're recalling the 1901 classic, The Bears of Blue River by Charles Major.

Amazon blurb: "The Bears of Blue River," written by Charles Major, takes place in 19th century rural Indiana. "Little Balser," the main character in the book, was a very brave young man who had many exciting (and sometimes frightening) encounters with bears and other wildlife. A fearless hunter, Little Balser dreamed of the day he would have his own gun. As "The Bears of Blue River" describes, his dream did eventually come true.
