Are the clues supposed to come off the board, or from the supply?

Unless specified otherwise (for example, a mystery may state move all clues on the board to the nearest wilderness location), they come from the supply.

Need more information on the situation to be sure. In general, if an effect is calling for clues to be added, those come from the supply unless otherwise specified (e.g. move the nearest clue to this location).

If players are gaining a clue from a research encounter, that comes off the board.

Sorry if it wasn't clear: this is the flip effect of the new AO. When you solve 2 mysteries, or have three Eldritch tokens on the Omen track, it says to flip and resolve "A Portal Opens!" .. which then tells you to put two clues on the AO sheet, and that is it.

It didn't really seem to be much of an effect. I guess it will slowly (very slowly) drain your clue options, since the effect triggers every mythos phase, but the game comes with so many clues that it didn't seem like much of a threat. That is where the speculation came that the clues should be from the board.

That's a one-time effect. Clues on the AO sheet count towards completion of the Final Mystery, so you start with some progress if you completed any Mysteries before the flip.

Ah, well, we misunderstood that one. In retrospect it makes sense, but due to general tiredness we collectively forgot that only two mysteries from the deck will ever be encountered with this AO. The Eldritch Tokens on the Omen track were misinterpreted by all as a negative, thus the effect they triggered was thought to be a negative.

We never read the final mystery, but this was chiefly due to us boxing the session right about when the flip occurred.

On the whole, I went into Strange Remnants with a lot of excitement, but found the experience a touch flat. Everybody was overcome with relics, and most mysteries needed only a single token due to player count (2). I'm considering setting it up again for a solo game, to see if I like it more.
