Apparently you can't run a search just for games identifies as being best with five. Is there a geek list or anything? Five players is out most dreaded play count, and we could use games that are best with five players. Not reasonably good or good enough with five; but best with five. But what are they...

My personal recommendations are El Grande, Amun-Re, Santiago, and The Princes of Florence.

I think you may have linked the wrong geek list. The linked one is to a closed auction.

Cyclades and Kemet are on my list. I've played Cyclades once and Kemet numerous times. They are intriguing both in that they play five very well/best and they also diverge from out fairly traditional Euro game focus. I do have big concerns about Kemet and replayability as nothing is randomized aside from the DI cards. There is nothing in each player's starting setup (aside from DI cards which play a fairly minor role in the grand scheme) or the general game setup. As a result, there is nothing really influencing people from doing anything differently from game to game, aside from players actively blocking other players' strategies. We have several players who can get stuck on certain strategic paths unless the game pushes them into different directions. The game also may be a little too confrontational and attacky for some. I don't remember Cyclades well enough to know if these are also issues for Cyclades.

El Grande is also on my list but is hopelessly out of print...for now, at least.

I found BSG boring and way too long for what it is. And I loved the show.

Some cheaper games here:

The Resistance. I feel it plays best between 5-7 players.

Coup. Great at 4-8 players, even better with the expansion Coup: Reformation.

You might try this variant, which shortens the game: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/486613/ultra-short-game-var...

BSG is very group-dependent. With the right people it can be a blast. Reading the flavor text on the crisis cards and role-playing have a big impact on the game.

I love Chaos in the Old World with 5 players.

Also, Dogs of War gives you much more interaction in 5, in 4 it is usually just 1vs1 but 5 is the sweet spot.

And Sushi Go! is amazing in any number.

Cosmic Encounter (This game is really at its best with 5 or 6 players)
1812: The Invasion of Canada
Space Cadets

+1 for Cyclades - You definitely won't run in to the issues you are concerned about with Kemet. The order of the gods changes every round and the bidding influences everything. You may be set on one specific strategy but if bidding isn't going your way, you will absolutely have to change things up.

BSG is my favorite game. It plays best with 5 IMO. It OS very group dependent but that's why I have made a group with a bunch of friends to play it with who all love it. It's always a blast to play. A lot of games that are social in nature are group dependent. Not everyone likes to lie or bluff and that's what a lot of these games is.
