Gems to Gemonade is an exception to the normal crash rules. It has a purple shield, so you can play it in response to a crash or countercrash. It simply turns the gems sent into a single gem that you can keep.

"He" is the player you purple-shield reaction for (using Gems of Gemonade). It says "he" because in 3 or 4 player game you are allowed to purple-shield react for another player to defend them.

In 2 player, "he" would just be yourself.

No need to have any gems in your pile to negate with Gems to Gemonade.

And IIRC, in 3rd edition you just get the money next time, not the gems in your deck/pile. (I set the correct number of [1]s to remember in front of me to remember).
