Subject: Number of players questions and amount of cards to take out

All,
I know with flight you take out 40 cards but am curious if anyone has ever played around with only taking out 10 or 20 with 4 players, 20 or 30 with 3 or normal 40 with 2 players.
Just curious since with 3 or 4 players the game seems to end sooner.
Thx

The problem with that is the cards you take out are used when the End Game is triggered.
Rather than reshuffling the deck you draw your last round from those 40 cards. So if you only have 10 or 20, you could potentially run out.
Also it's really not that different from playing with the old rules using only the original cards. Without any of the Promo cards, Flight adds 48 cards to the Trait deck... so your deck is actually 8 cards bigger than the base game deck when those 40 cards are removed.

Hmmm...at that level, all you are really doing is giving yourself one more round, since it's pretty easy to burn through 2040 cards in one round with 5 or 6 players.

That's the whole point. Those 40 cards are just meant for one last round.

Exactly, the deck size functions as a turn limit to prevent the games from spiraling out of control. You see this a little more clearly when playing a 2player game of Flight (taking out 40 cards for the 2player variant, then an additional 40 for Flight).

What I meant is, if you are mitigating a "longer" game for a higher # of players, you aren't really doing so.
For example, I played a 6 player game the other day. Halfway through round 4 we drew the last card of the standard deck and put in the last 40. So overall, the game lasted 5 rounds.
So if you only take out 10 or 20 instead of 40, it's likely you will only get ONE more round out of it, but it's entirely possible to still burn through that extra 20 cards in the same amount of time depending on how many species are on the board, species dying out with traits on them, etc.
So really, I don't think an extra 2030 cards in the main deck makes enough of a difference to really consider it a valid "variant", or to warrant adding it into the rules.

However, one could reshuffle the deck like the base game, so having 10 left over is not a problem then.
