A while ago I introduced you guys to the 7th Continent, a new and unique adventure card game coming soon from Serious Poulp. Now there’s a lot to be said about this game and so as not to overload you with TOO much info (and to conserve a few surprises) I thought we could break it down into a series of articles that, when compiled, will give you everything you need to know about the game! So here’s part one: Just what is "The 7th Continent"?

The 7th Continent is a board game "where YOU are the hero". Sound familiar? It should do. The game is heavily inspired by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone’s "Fighting Fantasy" book series that was released all the way back in 1982 and has been popular with gamers ever since.

PICK A CARD, BUT NOT ANY CARD

In these books the reader took on the role of the protagonist and was faced with many, many choices as the adventure progressed. These choices took the form of page numbers to which the player/reader would turn in order to find out the consequences of his decisions.

The 7th Continent uses the same mechanic but replaces pages with cards. In this new, "fighting Fantasy" card game, you, and up to 3 other players, take on the role of explorers who participated in the discovery of the infamous 7th continent. After your return you are plagued by nightmares and visions. One night, after losing consciousness from pure exhaustion, you awake to find yourself on a strange island. How you got here and where exactly "here" is is a mystery to you. All you have is your knowledge, wits, the clothes on your back and your adventuring journal containing some of your notes from your previous expedition, the others having been ripped out by an unknown protagonist.

A CURSE UPON THEE...

It soon becomes clear that a strange curse is the cause of your current predicament and that somewhere, on the continent, you should be able to find a clue to curing what ails you. Therein lies the issue though…"somewhere". You have no idea where to begin your search apart from scenes that you can recall from your feverous visions and vague notes scribbled in your old journal. You’ll have to strike out, explore the continent, survive and search for a means to lift the curse.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

The game "board" is made out of numbered cards and, as you delve deeper and deeper into the mysteries of the continent, you’ll add more and more cards to the table. As the game grows, it will become one of, if not the biggest board game ever mad. If you were to put all the cards out at once, it would be over 2m²! There is of course a system to making this epic board a lot more manageable, but we’ll get to that in another article.

Each "map" card show different actions that you can perform whilst on it such as searching a cave or climbing up a precarious cliff face so as to get a better view of the surrounding area. Performing these actions will make you draw specific cards that will detail the results of your actions. Some of these actions have multiple cards available, at which point you pick one at random. Is there a source of fresh water in the cave or a pissed off grizzly bear? Only one way to find out!

THROUGH THE MYST

Map cards also specify in which direction you can continue exploring, however each map card requires you to resolve a random encounter before continuing onwards. Maybe you’ll find some lost pages from your journal, or snowstorm will blind you, requiring an orientation test to see if you can find your way through it. The 7th continent is a mysterious, dangerous place and has many surprises in store for the unwary traveller.

MIND OVER MATTER

As an adventurer your Action Deck is your main resource. It fulfills 2 functions. It allows you to perform actions by drawing a certain number of cards. These cards also dictate whether you succeed in these actions. There are also idea and inspiration cards in there that you can keep in your hand. These have a whole range of effects such as allowing you to craft objects or conferring certain bonuses to you. This deck is also your "vitality" and you’ll need to find food and shelter as these are the only ways to replenish the action deck. Should you ever run out of cards then your adventure may come to an abrupt end as the malicious influence of the continent overwhelms you.

So make sure you keep an eye out for food sources or places where you can put your feet up for a bit, lest the island get the better of you!

Next time, we’ll talk more about the Action Deck and the actions you can perform!

it looks great.

how many random encounters are included? if you have to resolve one of them for each map card, i hope there will be a lot of diverse encounters.

Hi,

There will be hundreds of various events in the core box and many of them will be random (although each random event is linked to a specific area of the continent in order to avoid a snow storm while you explore a dungeon...).

Each expansion (there are 4 currently scheduled for the KS campaign) will ad more events + there will be Stretch Goals offering additional event cards as well.

It's most likely that you won't see every event in a single game
