Played at Abubika Games, Gastonia, NC, USA.

This is a game I played today. I'm still new to X-Wing, with a half dozen games under my belt. My plan was to favor the Rebels. That was until I met the Phantoms, Echo and Whisper. This is also the first time I've written up a game of X-Wing.

My opponent's force:
The 7 pilot skill YV-666 with the Houndstooth title.
Bosch
Tactician
Push the Limit
Mercanary Copilot
Heavy Laser
and another upgrade. total of 64 pts

N'Dru Suhla Z-95, with some upgrades - 23 pts
One of the upgrades was Glitterdust (?)

Black Sun Soldier Z-95 - 13 pts

My force:

Darth Vader - 35 pts
Swarm Tactics
Concussion Missiles

Whisper - 39 pts
Recon Specialist
Fire-Control System
Stygium Particle Accelerator

Obsidian Squadron Pilot x2 - 26 pts

I had Obsidian Squadron on my right, with Darth and Whisper on my left. My opponent was set up in the corner, to my right. Things started out ugly for me. My ships all moving 4 straight. I didn't know how Hounds Tooth flew, so was surprised when it appeared in range 3 of one of my TIEs. Whisper was cloaked. The shooting left one TIE with a single hull, and Hounds Tooth with a shield hit.

In the next few turns, N-Dru Suhla one-shotted a TIE, the other TIE eventually died, and Darth himself got killed (by Hounds Tooth). In return, Whisper scored 3 hits on the Black Sun Soldier, in a single salvo (who was finished off by Darth or the damaged TIE). Oh yeah, I was surprised again when Hounds Tooth didn't move at all on turn 2.

Then it was Whisper versus an undamaged N-Dru Suhla and a Hounds Tooth with 5 out of 6 shields. Not looking good for the Empire.

On the other hand, I have a knack for flying the Phantom. I kept my distance from the enemy, striving to get behind Hounds Tooth. That 180 degree firing arc is intimidating. Did the cloak, decloak, cloak shuffle. Those free evade tokens were a life saver.

Finally, I got face to face with my foe on a board edge. Somehow I managed to destroy N-Dru Suhla and avoid getting pounded in return. Free evade tokens and double focus tokens kept me alive.

After that, I kept my distance again till hope returned. Hounds Tooth was headed for an asteroid and had a stress token. My manuever finally put Whisper behind the Hound at range 1. My first salvo removed 3 shields. Next move, the Hound had to turn to avoid the asteroid. I managed to remain at range 1. 2 hits and 3 crits! Next move, I'm still behind the Hound at range 2. 3 hits finish the Hound.

Bosch pilots his Z-95 out of the flaming wreckage of his ship. Next turn, he does a 3 K-turn, I do a hard 2, and he is in my firing arc. Four dice, a pair of focus tokens, and I score 4 uncanceled hits!

That was a fun game. I still find it hard to believe I won. In a tournament my opponent probably would have won on time. Oh, my opponent was the guy who introduced me to the Phantom, letting me fly one of his. (He likes Echo, who is also lots of fun to fly)

The Hounds Tooth is an interesting ship. If I do decide to play Scum, I think I'll get this ship. I'll need a Z-95 as well.

It's always nice when you have everything against you, but you still manage to get the win. It doesn't happen too often, but it is one of the most beautiful things that can happen in X wing.

Before you get too used to Whisper, make sure you pull up the FAQ and read the errata to the Decloak rules. It was a little broken as printed. I haven't seen a Phantom reprinted recently enough to have an updated Decloak rule card, but I'm sure one will come in the Mist Hunter.

I know about the errata (got the document on my Nook), having to declare Decloak before any movement dials are revealed. In this battle, I usually remembered that. When I didn't remember to declare the decloak, the cloak stayed on.
