So, We ran out the Radier last night. My buddy:

got the Raider recently, and we have been itching to try it. Finally, we got a chance when our FLGS had a Star Wars game day. This was actually our third game in a long night of hard core Star Wars gaming.

KAM, with our friend Javier, ran the Imperial list.

They had the following:

Imperial Raider w, a great many guns and crew (149 pts). Sadly I can't recall all that was on this bad boy. Many guns, including Ion Cannons, a repair crewman, and others. KAM might let us know later.

Edit: The Raider Build:
Fore: Quad Laser, Gunnery Team, Tibana Gas, and Instigator Title.
Aft: Quad Laser, Ion Cannon, Backup Shield Generator, Shield Engineer, WED-15, Sensor Team, Engineering Team.

Then, an additional 100 pts of escort ships:
2 Tie Fighters
Darth Vader w/ Tie/x1, Targeting Computer, and Engine Upgrade.
Soontir Fel with PTL and something else, but I can't recall right now.

We are loving that Vader ship right now.

I ran the following:
2 Binarye
2 Cartel Spacer with Scyk, w/ Mangler
2 Syndicate Thug w/ BTL, w/ R4 Agromech, w/ Blaster Turret
Torkil in Moldy Crow, w/ Blaster Turret, w/ Recon Specialist,
Emon Azzameen in Adrasta, w/ Engine Upgrade, Proton Bomb x2, Merc Co-Pilot,
IG88B w/ HLC, autothrusters, Fire Control, Inertial Dampeners

This fleet was nearly identical to a fleet I ran against KAM recently, where we ran a variation of the 3 transport scenario. He beat me there, but it was close. I wish I would have dropped the HLC from the IG and put a different gun there. Next time!

Anyhow, I was at 250 on the dot and they were at 249.
I decided to run the 2 large ships and the BTL's at the Raider. I sent the rest the other way.

The game:
Here was our status after first round:


Round 2 led to a joust on my right flank with Javier deciding to run and gun right at me with his support ships. I met him with my Cartel Spacers and Pirates, I tried to keep my Torkil back, but Soontir was distractied by Torkil and had to shoot last. The first round of shooting started, with the Imperials laying into one of my Cartel Spacers. Miraculously, that Spacer survived. His big evade payed large dividends. I got lucky with my dice.

My Scum targeted Soontir with their lasers, and poor Soontir died badly:



The next round I got too clever for my own good and I kiogan rolled with the Pirates. They got a pair of Tie Fighters right on their tail as a result. One of the Pirates suffered for his ill-advised maneuver and died in a hail of Tie Fighter/Darth Vader laser fire.

On the other flank, I tried to pass the fore of the Raider with Emon, the point being: to drop some bombs on that Raider. But, instead Emon got absolutely blasted by the Raider. Emon died in that round without getting a chance to drop those bombs. Side note, the BTL's attacked the nose of the Raider, as did the IG. They did reduce those shields quite a bit, but they did not crack the hull.

The Scyk that took big damage in round 2 bugged out, and then the Moldy Crow, the Pirates, and the other Scyk focused on Darth Vader and the Tie Fighters.

Eventually, the Pirates died, but those ships took Darth Vader with them. The Moldy Crow kept Darth shooting last and that Blaster Turret kept zinging away. The raider kept pinging away at ships in range, and it regularly caused damage. It killed that Cartel Spacer that was damaged in round 2, which had miraculously survived.

That left the following, with that Spacer about to die:


The BTL's split outside earlier. They did so to avoid ramming, but then, they hard turned back in. In the round above, the Raider suffered its first round of big damage. Notice that it had no damage until this point. It took Aft attacks from 2 BTLs, the IG 88, and the Moldy Crow. Additionally, it fired last, because the Moldy Crow distracted it. Bless Torvil's little heart.

The end game looked like this:


The IG and BTL's kept roughing up the Aft section of the Raider. That last Scyk kiogan rolled to catch the tail of that Tie fighter. Also, the Moldy Crow was ionized by the Raider. This led to much consternation and overthinking on my part. I did accidentally nudge that ship as I moved the IG around, but I THINK I moved it back closer than it should have been. We maneuvered, and as you can see, it JUST BARELY avoided being rammed. I wish I wouldn't have done that.soblue Anyhow, after maneuvering, the HWK/Crow survived, and as a result, the Raider shot last again.

This turn the Raider was crippled in the Aft as the damage finally cracked the shields and the Reinforcement Action. That darn reinforcement action is so frustrating, but I understand why it is there.

We decided to call the game at this point. It was only a matter of time for the ships to be destroyed, so rather than play it out, we called it. The joke was that I should just fly away to the corner and watch the crippled Raider float listlessly to the map edge. Funny stuff.

Conclusion:

This game, to me, was like a roller coaster. I was sure I was dead meat in the third round after I lost the Firespray, which had done no damage. I had dropped Soontir Fel, but I was very much afraid of the Raider. I would have bet a hundred dollars that I would lose.

In the rounds that followed, my cheap ships were able to inflict relevant damage, and Torkil, in the Moldy Crow, was repeatedly a major thorn. In hindsight, Javier should have targeted him early. He didn't because those Cartel Spacers were scary targets, so he focused on those instead. It is funny how that worked out, since we all kind of consider the HWK irrelevant. I have run the HWK quite a few times, and this was the best I have ever done with it.

KAM predicted the outcome, which I thought was impossible, and as he described it, the energy of the Raider simply gets overwhelmed at a certain point. When that happens, there is no coming back. My fear of the Raider was a function of getting mauled by the Tantive 2 or 3 times, but apparently I overestimated this time.

Ultimately, the IG and the BTL's overwhelmed the Aft of the Raider. Once he was crippled, the end game was a given.

Those BTL's are the real deal. I love the Y wing in the Star Wars universe, as do most of the guys I hang with. So, it has always been disappointing to us that the heavy gunner of the Rebel fleet was such a weak shooter. The BTL changes all of that. What a huge Title for the Y Wing. The R4 agromech is icing on the cake, but I don't think it is necesarry.

I love the Mangler cannon as well. The Cartel Spacer Gun Boats are amongst my favorite ships to play right now.

The Pirates are kind of lame, but they draw fire, which is worth something. I think I would prefer another Y Wing loaded out over those 2 ships. Maybe next time I can actually run the StarViper for the first time!

Anyhow, this was fun game, there was lots of tension over every turn of the game. I had a great time, and I think the other guys did too. I just wish I would have taken a few more pictures during the Mid Game. Too much Tension!

It was a lot of fun. We actually did the first Raider scenario as well. I used 2 B wings and Dash Rendar in that scenario. The B wings were obliterated, but Dash made it off the board after doing a full loop around the back side of the Raider.

Hello,

The Options I had for the Raider were:
