I just recently watched Firefly again, and this time around I found myself really appreciating Zoe. Her relationship with Wash is one of my favorite parts of the series. I've tried playing as her in the game a couple times now, but I'm finding myself really struggling to take advantage of her Loyalty ability.

Other than the other Leaders, I think there are five Soldiers in the base game. One of them is Zoe herself, who comes out when you play her as a Leader. Another is Book, who doesn't ask for a share of your profit anyway. I got Skunk in this last game, but I ended up ditching him in favor of better Crew cards a few turns later (I didn't have Explosives). I can see Fenris and Lund both being great situationally, but it just seems a heck of a lot harder to leverage Zoe's ability than, say, Mal or Monty's.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the most out of Zoe? Are there any expansions in particular that might help?

In my opinion, Zoe is custom made for Meridian. Grab Cortland (for free), 2 high-quality pieces of Gear, and some of the Gear that doesn't count against your total and you can plow through Fight and Talk tests. You'll need to get more Tech elsewhere, but at least you've got a pilot...

At Meridian, for example, you could get Mal's Pistol and Browncoat, Kaylee's Parasol, and the Operative's Sword, and Zoe ALONE nets out at 7 Fight and 1 Talk, with the ability to add +3 to a Negotiate test (admittedly, but Disgruntling herself, but if you've got a Fruity Oaty Bar, eat it after to remove Disgruntled. Adding Cortland brings you up to Fight 8 / Tech / 1 Talk 1 (or 4), with the ability to buy your way out of any Talk issues. All for free.

Second best choice is probably The Guardian, who is, for my money, the best Medic in the game.

Beyond that, you're either looking for Lund and The Specialist at Regina or Skunk and Fendris at Silverhold. Neither is a killer combination, though.

Thanks for the tip! On Sunday I'll be playing with the folks that would be my regular group (if they like it). If things go well, I'll pick up the expansion.

With just the core game, you're completely correct that there aren't a ton of options for Zoe. Honestly, I would say the best might be Silverhold. Hope to pick up Fendris and Skunk, and grab a ton of good gear while you're there.

Although you're only saving $300 per job with the 2 of them, one thing to remember is that it applies to EVERY job, whereas most folks who get larger bonuses have it apply to only a specific job type.

I've been thinking of replacing zoe's crew card with either a generic "dust devil" (one of her old compatriots, essentially) with the same ability orrrr a watered down version of mal, so that the game isn't out one soldier.

For what it's worth, with all expansions you can usually expect at least two soldiers to show up in any given game. If those two are cortland and the guardian you will probably win.
