PBF Rules

Codenames is a team-based party game with limited communication between a team's spymaster and his fellow agents. The spymaster changes from round to round. The first team to win three rounds wins!

At the start of each round, each team will nominate a spymaster. A 5x5 grid of words (25), will be laid out in front of all players, and the team's spymasters will be told secret information about those words, which they will need to convey, with limited communication methods, to their teammates.

I will randomly generate as assignment of four different colors to the 25 words in that round, with the follow numbers of colors: 9 Blue/Red, 8 Red/Blue, 7 White, 1 Black. I will then assign randomly at the start of the game a color to each team (e.g. Team 1 will be Blue and Team 2 will be Red). The team that goes first will be randomly selected the first round, and then alternate in subsequent rounds. The team that goes first in each round will have 9 words. I will then GeekMail both team spymasters the assignment of each word to its color via GeekMail, so that both know this secret information but the other team members do not. All the other players know are the 25 words in the grid.

1. Spymaster gives a clue.
On a team's turn, the spymaster must only say one word and one number. For instance, they might say, "safari 3." That means that there are three words out in the grid that are related to the word safari. They can say ONLY those two things: one word and one number. Exceptions are made for names (e.g. John Smith 2 is a valid clue) They must bold this to make it clear that is their official clue. After that, they are done talking for that turn (minus idle chit-chat).

Firm Rules
-Your clue must be about the meaning of the words.
(e.g. You can't use your clue to talk about the letters in a word or its position on the table. GLAND is NOT a valid clue for ENGLAND. You can't tie BED, BUG, and BOW together with a clue of "B 3".)
-Letters and numbers are valid clues as long as they refer to meanings.
(e.g. EIGHT 2 is a valid clue for SPIDER and FIGURE.)
-The number you say after your clue can't be used as a clue.
(e.g. CITRUS 8 is not a valid clue for LEMON and OCTOPUS.)
-You must use English words.
-You can't use any form of a word that has not yet been identified on the grid.
(e.g. Until BREAK has been guessed, you cannot say BREAK, BROKEN, BREAKDOWN, etc.)
-You cannot say part of a compound word that has not yet been identified.
(e.g. If HORSESHOE is in play, you cannot say HORSE, SHOE, UNHORSED, SNOWSHOW, etc.)
-Rhymes are only valid when they refer to the meaning of the word.
(SNAIL is a valid clue for MAIL, but it is not a valid clue for SCALE.)
-No acronyms or abbreviations.
(CIA may seem like a great clue, but it is not one word. Neither is LOL, UK, PhD, etc.)

Expert Clues
1. ZERO clue - You are allowed to use 0 as the number part of your clue.
(e.g. FEATHERS 0 means "None of our words relate to feathers.") If 0 is the number given, the usual limit on guesses does not apply.
2. UNLIMITED clue - You may also say "Unlimited" instead of a number for your clue. (e.g. FEATHERS UNLIMITED) If you do, the usual limit on guesses does not apply. The disadvantage is that your team will not know how many codenames relate to the new clue.

2. Agents point to words.
Now the rest of team must select words to guess at, one at a time. They can stop pointing out words at any time, but they must make at least one guess. Players must bold this pointing action to make it official (eg, "point to elephant"). They can only point at a number of words equal to one more than the number they were given. Once they point to a word, the moderator or one of the spymasters reveals the color of that word. If the word is the color of the team, the team may continue guessing words (up to the number + 1 given in the clue). If the color of the word is either White, or the other team's color, the turn immediately ends and the other team takes a turn. Teams may also pass by bolding 'pass'.

If the color is Black, then the round immediately ends and the other team wins the round.

If the black word is not guessed, the first team to point at all 9 (or 8) of their words wins the round.

First team to win three rounds wins.

Research is allowed.

Re: Codenames PBF #22 - Waitlist reservees get dibs.
For the spymasters:

Please have all reveals follow the format

Word is ~b{COLOR}~b

with appropriate color and no ~.

Adding an updated turnorder, words left, and colored word grid would be appreciated, but is not required

we're still waiting for two people to check in.

Sorry, I messed up the poll to close too early, but it looks like we will have random teams.

I've made the word chart, and hopefully we will be able to get going today =)

Re: Codenames PBF #22 - 1 spot left left
Taker here, er, but I thought #22 was already full, hence the "post #22 waiting list" waiting list entries?

ETA: Doesn't matter to me one way or the other, I'm happy to play in #22 and I'm also happy to wait for whatever #23 turns out to be.

lol, I took the first 6 people off the waiting list, but they had a day and a half to get back to me (I sent a gm), otherwise I was going to open up their spot for signups.

I thought it was fair so people weren't just taken off the list and stuck in limbo. I'll add you and we'll get going =)

EEEK!!!!

I was about to recommend anyone but me, since the thread shows that I'm more f'd up about what's going on than anyone else?!!!

If you insist (and our other teammate goes there) I'm happy to do it... but, er, nominate at your own risk.

I may have to point back to this post at some future time, just sayin

Dude I am totally not your teammate and am just throwing you under the bus for kicks and giggles... devil

Just ignore my silly suggestion.
Perhaps one of your teammates will be excited about taking the role.

I'm happy to be the spymaster if that's the team decision. I'm happy to not be the spymaster if that's the team decision.

Oh oh oh, purty please, just let me play?!

If I'm spymaster, you might have to wonder whose side I'm on, I could easily be a double-agent, so choose wisely devil

If it makes it easier, everyone will have a go at being the spymaster since we'll play at least 3 rounds.

OK, for the blue folks, better to have me up first than last, last might require some strategy and I'm not quite experienced with the game.

So, my official vote is whatever the other two people decide, unless they disagree. In which case, my vote is for the first name in alpha order.

I hope that's OK, I don't want to hold stuff up.
