The new Game Recommendation Algorithm is live, and you should notice the recommendations on game pages, as the individual caches expire.

The new algorithm produces recommendations for all ranked games, though some games only yield very weak recommendations.

A very enthusiastic multiple thumbs-up for this extremely useful and cool new tool!

Thanks Matthew!

That is pretty cool how for Lord of the Rings - The Confrontation: Deluxe Edition, there are no strong or standard recommendations. It seems pretty darn accurate for my top 10, especially considering that this game's recommendations are the worst for me, and that is reflected by them being "weak".

Great job indeed.

So, the recommendations for the wargames and heavier games (Imperial, Antiquity) seem good? The wargames in particular, I know little enough about to effectively evaluate whether it's recommendations are right, other than being other wargames. When I did the evaluation run last month, it seemed to be doing fairly well across genres though.

The war games are very tough. Victory in the Pacific recommends other games for that era, which is probaby the best it can do.

ASL? That does pick-up interesting games but probably is weaker than most of the matchers. It did get Advanced Tobruk, which is a great match, but it should grab Combat Commander: Europe for sure. It might be worth looking into why it didn't grab that.

In any case, I've got to look into all of those ??? games above! I'll bet there is at least one gem in there that I'd never have though to look at Probably many more.

Excellent work! I've been hoping for something like this on the Geek ever since I started coming here. The recommendations look really promising, too!

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

And where exactly are these recommendations?

I have gone to both Antiquity and Imperial, and I don't see them
I have added the recommendation module to the game entry page (I had it turned off before), and I don't see any recommendation.

Is this a cache issue I need to clear out?
Do I get "none" because I own the recommended games?
Or is it something else that I am missing?

Can we get a link to the recommendations section in the Jump To: bar at the top of the game pages?

Hm. On the default layout, it appears between "forums" and "statistics".

Trying going to a game page for a game you've never looked at before (a ranked game). This would be my best guess as to the cause.

It's shows the recommendations regardless of whether you own the game.

I use a custom layout. In fact, I can't get any edits to my custom layout to appear. I make changes, they show up in the edit menus, but not on the display page.

I added the Recommendations module at the end of my custom layout. Even now (3 hours after my post above), I don't see the Recommendations at all. Even going to ranked games I hadn't visited recently - I don't see any recommendations at all.

I even went so far as to delete my last module (Images) and I am not seeing the Recommendations at all. In fact, I am still seeing the Images module even after I had deleted it from my custom layout.

Wonder what is going on. I will wait some time to see if the layout is cached also or not. But even for games I haven't viewed, I am getting my older custom layout not my most recent one.

Heh, plugging in my favorite games seem to only give weak recommendations at best.
The first couple I tried were Robo Rally and Cosmic Encounter.
I guess those are pretty unique games though.

Custom game page layout is broken for me, too.

Any changes used to take effect immediately, but changes no longer have any effect (my custom layout from 2 days ago is effectively frozen).

Tried last night, and this morning. Tried CTRL+reload so it's not a local caching issue. Tried games I've never looked at, tried signing out & back in.

The change is remembered (eg replacing Collection by Recommendations) and is there if I go back to the "configure game page" page, but doesn't get acted upon.

Seems I had some more caching issues - isn't that always the case?

Anyway - you should be able to configure the game page now.

So, where's the anti-recommendation list. After weak, shouldn't there be a "Those who like X typically do not enjoy the following..."?

I generated anti-recommendations in the first pass of the algorithm, and they just weren't that interesting. Basically they were of the form:

"If you like this Eurogame, you won't enjoy this set of heavy wargames."
"If you like this heavy wargame, you won't enjoy these children's/party games."
"If you like this party game, you won't enjoy these wargames."
"If you like this abstract game, you won't enjoy these miniature games."

You can see:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/17996
for more examples.

I felt (and several others posting on that geeklist felt) that given the relative homogeneity of the anti-recommendations they didn't provide a lot of value and ran the risk of just being somewhat antagonistic.

Is the algorithms based off of what collections and rankings the user has? I know I have a relatively small collection and ranking and only get very weak recommendations, even for Puerto Rico. Is that suppose to happen?

Yes - If you haven't already, read the Wiki page Matthew mentioned in his original post:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Game_Recommendation_A...

Puerto Rico is covered under very popular games.
As noted above, take a look at Imperial for some strong recommendations.

I like what you have done here. Very nice.

One suggestion: Perhaps orient it vertically, so it is:

Strong Recommend | Recommend | Weak Recommend
Game 1 Game 4 Game 7
Game 2 Game 5 Game 8
Game 3 Game 6

ok. Maybe then I'm not understanding. When I go to the Imperial page, I get the exact same list as the first poster who listed the recommendations... which do not match me at all. The very weak ones match me more. So back to the question, is it specified to the user or not as it appears it isn't.

It is not specific to the user. It is specific to the game, hence it's presence on the game page.

For example, on the Indonesia page, the recommendations are recommendations of other games that people who like Indonesia also like.

Another caveat I should probably write into the Wiki page is that all the recommendations are those that are particular to that game. That is, if you like Indonesia, you probably like Puerto Rico but that's not particular to Indonesia. More or less, independent of what else you like, you probably like Puerto Rico (ie, 84% of people who have rated it give it an 8, 9 or 10). As such, recommending Puerto Rico (or Caylus, or E&T, etc.) isn't very particular.

ok. Then I would suggest to change the line in the Wiki that is about the user and the user collections as I interpreted that as the individual user instead of all users of BGG.
