Microgames are Awesome!
This contest is going to be incredible!
I am also excited about the other contests happening right now.
Together, we are making MicroGames more and more popular.
I couldn't wait to start this one.

This one has very specific limitations.
You need to design a game using 18 cards exactly.

Last year the game rules needed to be included into the cards.
This year that is also allowed, but you can use all 18 cards for the game. You can use an extra rule sheet 3.5 x 5 (the size of 2 cards side by side , front and back).
If you use the rules on the cards, maybe use the rules sheet for a diagram or something. The rulesheet is not to be used for gameplay.

Also, and this might scare people. No components.
Paper and pencil could be used for scoring, hard to avoid in some cases.
Next year we will allow 18 small components. This will be the 3rd round of the cycle. The following year will go back to 18 cards and nothing else.

Deadline
Contest starts - August 31, 2015
Geeklist opens - Oct 1, 2015
Submission Deadline - Dec. 30th, 2015 (extended from Dec. 3rd)

And..
The plan right now is to publish a series of 18 card games.
I am considering individually packaging them or packaging as a set.
More to come on that later.

I think kickstarter will be a good option.
I know everyone will want to know the terms.
It will be industry standard.
I will lay out the terms when they are decided.

Re: 18 Card microgame Contest (2015)
Good to see! I really enjoyed coming up with games for this contest last year (although I never completed them...).

I guess there should be one of those rules about "no games previously published"? But I hope if I complete one of the games I announced last year I can enter that?

Instead of just pnp, specify for instance that entries must be PDF, so we don't get so many other formats that might or might not work for all that are interested in playing?

Please do not make gamecrafter or any other site a mandatory requirement. If you end up publishing a game later I'm sure you can work something out with the designer for that game.

The game rules need to be included into the cards.

So am I correct to assume that if the rules take 4 cards, then that leaves you with 14 cards for the actual game.

We are ready to be in for this year as well!!!

The WIP will be CAMPING MANAGER !!!

A design from Lucrezia !!kiss

The game is 18 cards, for 2 players, who are running two campings.

The first completing its pitches with tents or caravans will win the game!

I am thinking to make it 18 cards plus a rule sheet this year.
Who likes that better?

Re: 18 Card microgame Contest (2015)
In my opinion 18 cards plus a rules sheet is better. I feel that this would definitely help the rules to be more clear and easy to understand (there was trouble with this last year). Ultimately I think this will produce better games for the contest.

Re: 18 Card microgame Contest (2015)
If we do go with a rules sheet could we limit the size to something less than a full sheet? The whole idea of a microgame is to be portable. Maybe limit it to 2 additional cards (for rules only) or a folded sheet the same size as 2 cards?

I don't want to mess with success. But last year some people wanted 18 cards plus a rule sheet. We can make that the max. If you want to include the rules in your cards than do that. If you make a rules sheet, you can still do 18 card print run and use that extra rule page, it opens up more possibilities. This will allow for a more detailed explanation of the rules. I would limit to A4 or letter size, if you think smaller, I can play with dimensions.

I agree with that! Now to finish a free lance job so I can concentrate on game designs - much more fun.

Regardless of the rule sheet size, I'm in! Working on a solo ultramarathon simulation game. It's really quite amazing how many different ways there are to use cards.

Cool.
True, you can do so much with cards. You just gave me an idea for a game where you need to mail cards to other countries and get them signed to fulfill a list of requirements. Like a geography scavenger hunt.

I'm ready to get in on the contest well before the deadline this time! I designed a game for this contest just a few days ago. 2-4 player press your luck card game. Think micro Incan Gold with more choices. The theme is trick-or-treating, just trying to come up with a name and need to do the graphic design and art.

Yayy!! I'm so excited for this year's contest. I'm working on a Kickstarter in October right now for a game I entered in last year's contest. It was the first BGG contest I had entered. Thanks so much for doing this again hack!

Re: 18 Card MicroGame Contest [2015]
18 cards plus rules sheet sounds great, especially if the sheet is limited in size so that you can still combine 3 games in a standard box with rules (the way a normal one-deck game are often sold, and I believe you can find printers for?). I don't know what size that would mean, but maybe A4 is right, or even smaller?

EDIT: Changing the rules a bit I just see as a good thing. Probably lots of ideas were not made last year because someone needed all 18 cards. It was fun to squeeze in the rules though. One of my incomplete games used the backs of the rules-cards during play for other purposes, so no cards were really wasted, but still even that game could definitely be improved if I can write more rules to explain everything.

So here's another question. Can the rules sheet be used for other nefarious purposes. Can one side be the rules and the other side a player board?

And

Might as well even that out to a round 300. Another 10 in the pot. Good luck to everyone. I can't wait to see what this year's contest brings.

I would just use the rules sheet for rules, it is going to be folded up and not very strong, better to use cards for a board if you need one.

I am still waiting to hear back from more people about rules sheet vs no rules sheet. I did like the fact the rules were included last year, but it might be nice to see it with rules that are separate this year. But if the majority of the people want to keep it the same as last year, I will agree.

Another vote for 18 cards plus rule sheet. That opens up so many more design possibilities, too. Making a game that uses all 18 cards and trying to fit the rules on those same cards forced some odd card designs. That can be alleviated with a single rules sheet.

I can go either way on the rules sheet vs. cards on rules. The game I described above was designed using just 16 cards, reserving two of them for rules, but if I can use those other cards in the game I would put them to good use.
