In our continuing quest to design the ideal option here, we have tweaked our tournament rules into something we are really happy with.

It can be summed up in one phrase: “Two turns, two Towers.”

When this style is desirable, we think this scheme sets the stage for some good gameplay.

Rules:

After designing their Earl decks, and before the game begins, each Earl selects 2 cards from their tray and places them down (for free) in front of their Earldoms as Towers.

Earls cannot Attack, Treachery or Intrigue each other for the first 2 rounds of play. The Viking markers do go out for those two rounds, as normal, and also conveniently indicate and remind players which round they are in.

“Two turns, two Towers.”

Notes:

Yup, this means that you have a 24 card Earl starting deck, and then 2 free starting Towers. So there are, indeed, 26 of your Earl cards on the table and in play.

This style of play accomplishes several things. Primarily it pushes the game into a more developed state earlier. It works quite well in various settings, and with several other variants you might want to play alongside this tournament rule. For other Ortus Regni games it might not be desirable. We do think that this version of the tournament rules is likely to be the final nuance for what it is intended to do (chuckle, famous last words, since we always like to play around with things). But it does seem to play quite well, as a stand alone style or in addition to drafting or some variant mats or some of the “a la carte” variant rules we have been working with. Providing a little more game space, by limiting early gains, for various situations to emerge mid to late game.

In other news

Just a heads-up that our variant mats arrived in the warehouse at the end of last week. And we hope to have those available in the online store sometime in the coming week.

We also hope to add a page to our website with all our current variant rule ideas, in about a week's time. So you won't have to search through BGG for all such posts.

Thanks for playing (!)
