I'm preparing for Avec Infini Regret (it'll be a matter of days!) but I must confess that I have only very scholastic memories on the topic, and not a single book fully focused.

The game includes 3 battles from 1562 to 1587. According to the Author, a 2nd volume is on the way with other 3 battles from 1590 to 1592. So I'm looking for something both with the big picture, and possibly with dedicated chapters for the battles, too.

Suggestions for a good reading? English language is not a problem (I can read better than I can write), french is so-so. Thanks in advance!

If your French is workable, Les Guerres de Religion by Pierre Miquel is a good general work--no battle maps unfortunately, nor as much military detail as I would like, but well done.

I am in the middle of reading Mack Holt's: The French Wars of Religion 1562-1629.

It's less about the battles and more about the politics, but it provides a pretty good overview of the period.

I haven't read it, but The French Wars of Religion, 1559-1598 by Knecht looks to be an affordable general history. I am going to pick it up myself.

Wow that is out of place. Very 90's, but not on point like

Just to add, I played the game and it is very good. I hope to see more Musket and Pike system games. The special rules are easy. Also, I hope you like cavalry because this one has plenty of it.

Although published in 1975, the best general history of the wars is J.H.M. Salmon's 'Society in Crisis' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Society-Crisis-Sixteenth-University-...)

The books by R.J. Knecht and Mack P. Holt (already mentioned) are also good introductions.

'Furies' by Lauro Martines (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Furies-Europe-1450-1700-Lauro-Martin...), although covering various European conflicts between 1450 and 1700, does have reasonable coverage of the French Wars of Religion, including sections on the sieges of Sancerre (1573) and Paris (1590).

If you want more in-depth studies and have a bit more money to spend, then the following are all worth a read:

James B. Wood 'The King's Army' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kings-Army-Soldiers-Religion-Cambrid...)

Stuart Carroll 'Noble Power during the French Wars of Religion' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Noble-Power-during-French-Religion/d...)

Mack P. Holt 'The Duke of Anjou and the Politique Struggle during the Wars of Religion' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Politique-Struggle-Religion-Cambridg...)

Wow, thanks a lot everyone, gents! A lot of iron in the fire here; I'm impressed by Knecht's book (I peeked), very well-structured, I think I'll start here.
All your other suggestions are also really stimulating, I've taken notes. I'll check what's available in the bookstore, to leaf through them de visu.

I've also found an italian book by Corrado Vivanti, Le guerre di religione nel Cinquecento (Religion wars in the 16th century) that I'd thrown in the mix. It'll be a busy Autumn!

Yup! Glad to hear that's good. Can't wait for it

This thread has popped up at just the right time. I've had the rules for Par le feu, le fer et la Foi on my table with Avec infini regret to follow so I have an appetite for this stuff at the minute. Lots of good books to look into now.
