Caterpillar Crawl, by Ravensburger, is a simple game designed for children 3-7 years old.

Components:The components of the game are the typical high standard that you would expect from Ravensburger. The gameboard is thick and the Caterpillars are cool looking. Caterpillars consist of a wooden front and a wooden back, connected by a piece of rope. Each caterpillar has a different color nose and feet, with a cute face.

Object of the Game and Gameplay: The object of Caterpillar Crawl is to advance your caterpillar across the garden to the finish line. Each turn a player rolls the 6 sided die which has 5 colors and one caterpillar face. The player then moves the front of his caterpillar to the color he rolled and brings the back of the caterpillar up behind it. If a player rolls the face, he can advance to any color. The length of the rope allows one to move up to 4 rows forward. The field consists of 15 rows then 2 rows past the finish line.

Strategy:There isn't much (any) strategy to the game. Each player rolls the die and then moves as far forward as possible. The colors aren't evenly spaced so it is not always possible to move the maximum distance each turn. It is possible to block an opponent, but only if the front or back of your caterpillar is on the exact color rolled.

Conclusion:This is definitely a game for only very young children. Although the recommended age is 3-7, 3 to 5 is probably more appropriate. The game offers about as much depth of play as Candyland or Chutes and Ladders. Fortunately, the components are much better and the game is much, much shorter, taking only about 5 to 10 minutes to play. For this reason, I would recommend the game over many of the others offered for young children.
