I'm looking for some great engine building games. Preferably card games, but other types of games are fine too.

Please exclude:
•deckbuilding games
•Race for the Galaxy
•San Juan
•Machi Koro

Mottainai and/or Impulse (I recommend and). Both of them by Carl Chudyk, one of the best designers for games like this.

For card games that also have a board, look at ZhanGuo or Lewis & Clark (or Inhabit the Earth when it comes out later this year.)

This is one of my favourite genres of games, and these are IMHO some of the best.

I think a good one would be Imperial Settlers. You can do some great engine building in that, along with the added bonus of trying to break down your opposition's.

Deus perhaps.
Greed I think besides a drafting game, it's a bit of an engine builder.
Splendor is an engine builder for sure.
London Could this one qualify loosely as an engine builder?

Just a note that most of those are deck builders.

Splendor is a very nice engine building game. Theme is a bit weak but the game play really makes up for it.

For a much heavier game Lewis and Clark is a great one. I can't speak for discoveries yet as I haven't gotten it yet (I'll try to remember and repost when I get a game in).

It's not out quite yet in the US (and not a card game) but Orleans is a fantastic engine building game.

Elysium is another great one.

I keep waffling on if I should put Power Grid on the list.... So here it is. Power Grid.

Well, you said to exclude San Juan. But hopefully that doesn't also include Puerto Rico, which is a very iconic engine building game. It's probably not exactly what you're looking for since it's not a card game. But it meets the central criteria well.
