Unfortunately, as this game seems to lack good variations for 2 or 3 players, we decided first to put jewels in all ports, and the player to the left of the one raiding roles for the port being raided if it is not the home port of another player (other than this and the Phantom Ship, these variations can be used with 4 players as well).

Also, an extra ship is put on the board as being the Phantom Ship. When a player roles doubles, s/he must skirmish with the Phantom Ship and either lose of win according to other rules. However, the player does not role the dice again after getting doubles. If the player who is the Dread Pirate skirmishes with the Phantom Ship, it can be played that either the Phantom Ship then becomes the Dread Pirate or the flag is returned to the Dread Pirate island (the 2nd seems to be better or else the Dread Pirate may be out of play for quite a while).

Upgrade variants: a player may return to his/her own port in order to upgrade his/her ship. The cost of the upgrade is either a jewel of each colour, or 6 dubloons. The ship also must stay an extra turn in port in order to have the upgrades completed. After having the upgrades, an additional point is added to skirmishes, much like if the player is Dread Pirate. However, due to the added weight of the additional cannon, the speed of the ship is one slower. Note: on of the other posting does suggest a good alternative upgrade in which the player with the upgrade chooses the higher of 2 dice.

Ending the game: After all the jewels have been pillaged, each player must return to his/her own port. Players who must take turns in additional rounds in order to get to their home port must pay a jewel to any ships already in their home port. Example: Julie reaches her home port, but at the end of the round both Kevin and Sally have yet to reach their port. Both pay her a jewel. In the next round Kevin reaches his home port, but Sally does not, therefore has to pay both Julie and Kevin a jewel as a penalty. Also can be played that the dubloons in the home port count towards the players final score (especially good if the port fortification suggested in other forums is put into play).
