why would they do that? they couldn't have been stupid enough to think it wouldn't come out. Now they face billions in fines and probably bankruptcy.

For those unfamiliar, VW got caught cheating on emissions tests.

Is there a link to a story? I'm curious about how long this has been going on and what type of cheating it was.

going on for 6 years. they rigged the computer to only enable the emissions reducing hardware during an actual emissions test.

Here is a good synopsis (since 2009 and they programmed the cars to detect when they are being tested and not emit then)

If auto drivers don't have to obey speed laws except when cops are watching, why should auto makers obey emission laws when the epa isn't watching? A culture of criminality.

I buy a car that's supposed to have X performance with Y emissions, not just when it's being tested.

Some manufacturers lie about horsepower numbers....
What do you think a bout them doing that?

All lying should be punished.

they should be sued and forced to list correct numbers.

wait, you just asked a question instead of answering one. don't you dislike that practice?

are you going to answer my question?

I wonder how many VW owners are actually going to do this recall. Are people willing to personally trade off reduced horsepower and mileage for reduced emissions?

I would imagine that many States that do emissions testing might make the recall mandatory for re-registering the vehicle.

Other carmakers have done the same thing (or at least one that I know of). Wonder if they'll all get caught now?

The EPA (and German equivalent) really shouldn't publish their test ahead of time and/or should mix the test up some, if they want to avoid such practices.

They have to fix them, my concerns as an owner of one of these engines is what does the fix do to the car's performance.

It will be lower performance.
Have no doubt on that....

Well, of course. There was no reason to do this other than to improve performance in the cars, which would have suffered if they met emissions standards all the time. (It certainly wasn't a money-saver; it cost them money to program the cars to behave this way.)

Also, although it doesn't make this any better for VW (in fact, possibly worse), the cheating applied only to certain diesel cars. At least, the cheating we know about.
