Going through my personal page I found this new (to me) feature of listing all the games you own by date published. Scrolling back I noticed that I have at least 1 game from every year of the last 40 years, that is all years except 1990

Ok, so I don't have a game of that year, but I trade/sell a lot, so surely a game from 1990 must show up in previously owned. Nope.

Now I'm really curious and go through all the games published in 1990 looking for a game that I might have played someone elses copy of. Nope.

1990 - looks like it never existed at all.

The only viable explanation is that I got abducted by aliens who wiped my memory. That or too much beer.

Anyone else have such a "hole" in his gaming ?

My guess is that the general boardgaming populous took the year off to attend Bell Biv Devoe concerts.

Nope.

The Republic of Rome
Silent Death
Hoity Toity
HeroQuest Advanced Quest
Mighty Empires
Space Crusade

Then, again, I am American, and most of these are pretty early American boardgaming classics.

I have multiple games from 1990, including Key to the Kingdom and Magestones. More importantly, your question led me to looking at the list, and seeing this:

Dragon Quest Dungeon

Which looks interesting, and reminded me that there have been multiple board games created based on Dragon Quest. Which led me to searching, and that led me to my new MUST HAVE game:

Dragon Quest: Slime Race

1990? Space Crusade happened (along with Heroquest - we got it a bit later than the rest of the world). My introduction to real board games (and miniatures). Great year

Once again, you're welcome to come & play it with me .

EDIT: my continuous series of years of games owned only starts in 1995 blush

...or maybe something like this?

Spoiler (click to reveal)
The phantom time hypothesis is a historical conspiracy theory advanced by German historian and publisher Heribert Illig (born 1947) which proposes that the Anno Domini dating system was fabricated, adding in a period of "phantom time" in the Early Middle Ages, from AD 614 to 911. According to the hypothesis, events dated to this period in Europe and neighbouring regions either occurred in a different period, or did not occur at all.

I've had 20 years more of acquiring games, so my series starts in the early seventies. Except for 1990

But 1990 is when Pretty Pretty Princess came out! Why don't you have that in your collection? It got a lot of play in my household a while back.

Edit: Beaten to it by Kuhrusty! I should have known that would happen.

As a shortcut for others, here is a link showing 1990 games according to current rank.

I'm still enthusiastic about Daytona 500, but not really anything else there.

All things being equal, that's a pretty awful list.

I loved that game. A friend of mine even created custom wooden, uh... shelves- or... -shrug- thingies to hold the little creatures while playing and mounted his game pieces on thick cardboard for a deluxe version of it.

Search for the Emperor's Treasure is a good one in there. The Darlene map from the original is far prettier, though.

Overall, yeah... 1990 wasn't a very good year for games, it seems.

's a hole in my collection too...my continuous run of games starts in 1991. I had Republic of Rome for a while, but then decided to only keep games that might get played at least once every few years.

Roughly a dozen games I've played on that list. Most notably, 1835 - I played that for the first time at OrcCon 1991 - it became a big hit with my group for a while.

I don't get the folks talking down the list for that year - I see several decent titles (Eurorails, 1835, and Express popped out at me; all games that provided me many enjoyable hours of play.) I guess your mileage may vary.

And yes, 95% of that list looks like dreck to my tastes, but could the same not be said of any year, by any of us?

I suspect not. I think I would be hard for most people to complain about the year 2012, for example, which saw an explosion of highly-acclaimed games in just about every genre.

Some years are just worse than others.
