Hello,

So we attempted to start playing the campaign this weekend and it was a failure. Ended up going back to squirmish. One question that came up was this. The imperial player picks a class. Does the IP then get to start with the class card that has no cost?

Yes. The Learn to Play guide is quite clear about this.
"The Imperial player chooses one Imperial Class deck. Then he retrieves the basic Class card (the card without an XP cost) from this deck and places it faceup on the table in front of him." (page 10)

Thanks- i must have missed this. Should have not been in such a hurry and prepped this the night before and that might have helped.

I ran Aftermath 5 times before we started a campaign and made mistakes every time. In fact we took an entire campaign to get all of the rules down. I ran Royal Guard Champ without earning it. We made heroes test for interaction endlessly. Fenn didn't get to use Lone Wolf if he had no strain. The list goes on. But we still had tons of fun, and started another campaign immediately.

Well, talking about possible mistakes, you can't avoid making a few in the first few missions. To avoid making the same ones the others (us included) have made, if you haven't read it yet, at least skim through the first few pages of:
What are some crazy or common rule-breaking mistakes your group made whilst learning the game?
