Has anyone tried putting a few cards in each searchable room at the start of the game, so maybe 1 per Survivor in the room they start in (or none if on a street) and 1 card per two survivors in each other room? Once the cards in a room are gone you can't search it anymore.

So with 4 survivors starting in a room there would be 4 cards in the start room and 2 in each other searchable room on the board.

On a boards with few searchable rooms or many searchable rooms this might need to be altered, or the game might not be possible.

Maybe also each time you pick up a cross you add an extra card to any room that still has cards in it.

People often say about limiting searches, this would do that without any book keeping or dice rolling.

I'm going to try it next time we play, so I'll let you know how it turns out. Won't be until next Wednesday though.

Not sure what to do about police cars.

My group has tried this on a limited basis -- key/main rooms and some cars, but we find that we don't search a lot anyway as we try to get the mission done before the board is overrun with zombies.

When we do this, we also try to keep some things themed, ie, mostly weapons/shotguns in a police car, and food and drink in the diner.

It might be interesting to limit each room to a d4 number of cards. Or roll a d6 and if a 1 or 2 is rolled the room is exhausted. Has anyone tried this?

Howzabout dealing out (face down) ALL equipment cards as equal as possible in the available searchable areas. A search action gets you one of the cards, and dropping equipment results in the card being left face up in the area - thus when a search action is done you can either take any one of the face up cards or pick one of the faced down ones.
(1) the matching set skill doesn't work under this house rule, the flashlight gets you 2 face down cards but a single face up one.
(2) the molotovs - once you've used them there is no more since "under this houserule how could they fine their way back onto the board?"

Unfortunately - some games end up with the team retreated deep in a building, desperately trying to hold off the oncoming zs whilst frantically searching for the molotov ingredients, so with this HR in play your team would be screwed if those needed cards were in unreachable rooms.

modification - as above deal out all face down & dropped items are placed face up in the zone. If an zombie passes thru a zone containing face up cards, the zombie destroys these items of equipment and the cards are placed back in the equipment stack. - face down cards are considered hidden out of the way.
Now when searching a room you can either pick any face up card, pick a random face down card OR take one from the equipment stack.
And when a molotov is used the bottles + gas cards are put on the equipment stack, making them available for future use.
