Hey everyone,
About a year ago I was here looking for a dungeoncrawler. Back then Shadow of brimstone came out on top.
Now a year later I still love SoB. But also want something lighter, easier, quicker to add to my collection.

So what can I get?

Must haves,
No overlord, so only full coop games.
Must have miniatures, so no card games or stuff like that.
Must be good with 2 players, we never play multiple characters.
Prefer a fantasy setting, but other settings are allowed.
Not to big a footprint, quick setuptime, plays in around 1 hour 1.5 hours with 2 players.
Want this game to be able to hit the table in between other games (shadow of brimstone never gets played here for just one game, this really is a Saturday afternoon game for us)
Little to no bookkeeping (so not like sob).
Campaign is allowed but not necessary, character progress aswell.

Was looking into the dungeon and dragons titles already, maybe something else that would fit my criteria?

Arcadia Quest pefectly fits all your criterias, except one:

- deffinitely shorter than 1.5 h in 2 players (with 4, it can get longer)
- no overlord, but it is not coop, instead it is competitive
- beautiful fantasy miniatures
- great in 2p
- character progress + campaign but not necessary

Mice and Mystics could work.
Legends of Andor maybe?

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but I am reminded of Jim Gaffigan's joke about when he hears people say, "I like fish as long as it doesn't taste like fish", and he says "I've got news for you. You don't like fish."

Seriously, when you add the criteria that it must have miniatures, that plants one firmly in the Ameritrash category and all that goes with it: big footprints, lots of rules, setup, and conflict. The only thing I can think of is Run, Fight, or Die! which I'm guessing you would not consider a dungeon crawler.

Perhaps Defenders of the Realm?

Good luck.

We own andor and like it but not really a dungeoncrawler.
Own claustrophobia, but don't play it a lot cause the 1vs1.

And on the fiddly, rules part.
I'm looking for something like eldritch horror in that area.
Just don't want another game like sob where we have to take notes, remember that your tail does damage on a 1, that other mutation does that. Its just to mutch for a fun evening game imho.

I love Myth, although arguably it's still a work in progress.

I think Mice and Mystics might work well for you - it seems to meet everything. It's got a bit of a love/hate following from what I've seen.

The main issue with Mice and Mystics is everything is pregenerated, you have to take certain Mice with you so it'll coincide with the story. Otherwise it's a really good game.

Ah yes, you are looking for : the best boardgame in existence that does not exist yet.

Generally, (generalizations here folks, don't tear me from limb to limb) board games with miniatures have a large footprint, and thus a slow setup times (after all, you have to justify using miniatures).

Any adventure game, with a campaign will generally (see what I did here) have a fair amount of book-keeping, precisely because lots of stuff happen to your characters. They find weapons/armor and you have to record it.

What you are looking for is a mix between Pathfindder adventure card game and fordibben island.

Let me know when you find it. laughlaughlaugh

All jokes aside, I have been looking for such a game, and have failed to find anything that I would like.

The new waharmmer quest card game from FFG could have been a hit, but it has no miniatures. Equally, the coming edition of Runebound may be too long to setup and play...

I believe Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game will be close to what you seek. While it is a card game, it plays much like a minis+map game (the cards layout as a map).

Of course, it isn't available yet, though the prototype has been around for years. The Kickstarter to produce it just recently finished.

Those match all your criteria and I think they are really your best choice. Get Temple of Elemental Evil if you want a campaign and character progression.

I think those will be your overall best fit. We have and enjoy Ashardalon, but the newest one looks interesting to us.

I had the same criteria awhile back and ended up settling on DungeonQuest.

It's brutal, but very fun and light on mechanics.

You said you're already looking into the D&D miniature boxed sets, so this is a vote to just go buy one of them.

There's many hours of entertainment in each one and they're quite enjoyable.

Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game
Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt Board Game
Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon Board Game
Dungeons & Dragons: Temple of Elemental Evil Board Game

They are all players-vs-board (no overlord)
They all contain (unpainted) miniatures.
Cards *are* involved, but it's really about the minis moving around the map.
2 players is fine. The game tends to auto-adjust to the number of players.
One of the most recognizable fantasy settings.
Footprint is manageable. Usually 12-16 tiles, depending on how the map builds itself. This may be your one issue depending on table size.
It can fit as one of many games in an afternoon of many titles.
Book-keeping is minimal.
The last one (Temple) has a campaign mode where your characters can get better by buying "upgrades" and holding onto equipment from play through to play through.

They're all good - I'd pick the theme that you like the best and run with it.

Super Fantasy: Ugly Snouts Assault might be a good one for you. It's coop, about 60 minutes, has 6 scenarios that tell a story (your characters start from scratch each game.) It has standees instead of minis. It's a good, light coop dungeon crawl. You level up during the game, which is a nice touch.

I see others recommended Mice & Mystics. My wife and I play that game as well as the Dungeon and Dragons coop board games of:

Castle Ravenloft
Wrath of Ashardalon
Legend of Drizzt
Temple of Elemental Evil

These should fit your criteria. I, too, was looking for pure dungeon coops, scalable from 2 to more, play in two hours, didn't have to be carried over to another session, and had little-to-no bookkeeping. These were the best I found playing (along with Mice and Mystics.)
