I'm sorry if I missed it in the rules, but is there any good definition of what is considered a "light game" vs a "strategy game" ? The only thing I saw in the rules was something to the effect of "A light game is generally a family game or party game."

So what would something with the complexity of, say, Ticket to Ride: Europe or Coup be considered? I know gamers who would consider those "family games" and also some who would consider those "strategy games."

Thanks!

Thanks for the question Jay! Everyone seems to understand categories differently, and I hesitate to define someone's game for them.

For the Ion Award, the Strategy category is looking for games targeted at hobby gamers. Those with experience in a lot of games, and who might be comfortable with a little more complex ruleset, or strategy.

The Light Category is targeted at a more simple ruleset, maybe with a less complex strategy.

Is it possible to enter a game (or games) but not attend? I have another game convention commitment that same weekend. But I sure would like to enter this.

The first round of judging is all done remotely. We will send your game information to the judges, and they will determine which games will be selected as finalists in the competition.

If you are chosen as a finalist, you can arrange for someone else to present your game to the final judges on the day of the event.

Only about 2 weeks left for submissions!

We've had game designs coming in. Don't wait until the final deadline. If you wait, you might miss it!

I know that an entry to this contest can not be in consideration for a publishing deal at the time, but can my design also be submitted to a different contest at the same time? There is no publishing deal as part of the prize for the other contest, the Cardboard Edison Award to be specific. Thank you for your response!

Yes, you can submit your game to other contests, at the same time as the Ion Award. Just make sure you follow the rules of the Ion, such as not signing any contracts until the Ion Award final judging has completed.

Some other questions I've received by email:

d10-1 Is the video link mandatory?

No, the video link is optional.

d10-2 Does the image of the prototype have to be a photograph, or can it be a digital image?

The image can be a photograph or a digital image.

Just a little over a week left to enter! January 1st at midnight is the deadline.

Just managed to get it submitted. Thanks!

I tried submitting my game about 10 minutes ago, but the form is still showing me the little spinner. Also, when I uploaded my rules and image files, it didn't really show me any indication that they were uploaded properly. Is that normal? Just want to make sure all my files get to you properly. Thanks!
