Sorry - I don't *have* a hot deal to announce, I'm actually looking for a hot deal... on bulk dice!

One of the promotions I'll be running at the Geekway to the West this year will be a raffle to purchase opportunities to guess the number of dice in a ginormous plastic jar I've got... The person with the closest guess wins the whole thing!

wow d10-0d10-1d10-2d10-3d10-4d10-5d10-6d10-7d10-8d10-9 wow

So I'm trying to find a great resource to purchase lots of bulk dice (several pounds worth). I've got some fancy shmancy dice for the container, but I think the majority of them can be fairly standard six-sided dice.

I've googled and snooped around quite a bit online, and tried leveraging some of my RPG contacts, but nothing is really that great a deal. If you have any ideas, or think you might be able to help me out, please let me know!

Thanks!!

I actually did something like you are planning a few years ago. I used ebay and was able to pick up some pretty big piles of mixed dice pretty cheap. I know one auction I picked up had a couple hundred dice in various sides/colors/etc and with shipping I think I paid around 8 bucks.
depending on the ginormousity (heh) of your jar it could cost you quite a bit though.

there's also occasionally "pound o dice" lots around

Another good thing to make the guessing tougher I found is get
a crapload of POTSM type tiny dice and mix them in there. I picked
up a film canister of them once in a bulk lot and there must have been 150 in there.

anyway, good luck!

I've found that e-bay prices are starting to get a little on the crazy side. There's always the pound-o-dice that retails for ~$20, and there's also the skull-bag-with-pound-o-dice that retails for ~$25. From what I've read, the regular pound is roughly 80-100 dice, depending on who you talk to, but I bought a skull bag and there was somewhere around 180 dice. Don't know how much you feel like spending on a raffle prize, but from my dice price watching (and I've done more than I care to admit), the skull bag is the best bang for your buck. Plus you get the lame bag, too! (photo from RPG.net)

Sets of 200 of the same color dice can be found here for $40, and they have a variety of colors, but that may be a bit expensive

That bag is so terrible it's awesome. Just out of curiosity, what kind of dice do you receive in the "skull bag"? I mean, what percentage of them are decent, usable dice, and what percentage are the terrible color combos that are nearly unreadable? What percentage are pleasing to the eye, and which of them are the terrible color combos that are so hideous that you'll never use them?

144 d6 for $16.50 - http://www.eaieducation.com/531074.html

or http://www.enasco.com/top/255/Dice/Polyhedra+Dice/ carries the above as well as assorted polyhedral dice, fractional dice, etc, etc. (They also sell sets of 12 5/8" blank dice with 1/2" stickers for $2.50, might grab some to replace some badly worn Runebound dice...)

I recommend visiting www.chessex.com and see what they can do for you. They're usually very helpful and can maybe supply multiple Pounds and a better price. The web site should have their phone number.

Yes the bag is awesomely terrible... not quite so that I'd pack my lunch in it, but close.

I'd say that >95% of the dice didn't have the terrible clashing colours between the numbers and facets. However the general mix wasn't as different as I'd like. Out of the 30 or 40 d20s I got, I might have only got about five or six different designs. And some might not like them much, either - they were purple or red swirls on black with gold numbers. Some people don't like the gold on black combo (it's not jarring, but can be hard to see in the right (or wrong) lighting). At a guess, 40-50% of the dice were these swirls on black. I also got a lot of d10s that were 20-sided. Almost all the d8s and d10s (both with 10 and 20 sides) were the coloured clear with white numbers. The only real annoying one there was a totally clear one that you can't really read if it lands on a white piece of paper.

I would say the deal was worth it... there was a good mix of sizes (I don't think I got less than 15 of any particular size between d4 and d20) and lots of miniature dice (which are pretty neat... maybe 5-7 mm in 'height'). Some dice I'll never use that are sort of oblong (I've seen something like them in a football game here on a geek). All in all I was happy with the purchase. Of course I have a feeling that what they get in surplus stock from other companies is what you get in your bag, so your styles and patterns may vary drastically between homogeniety and heterogeniety.

Thanks Kristian. That's exactly the information I was looking for. I might take a chance on a bag.
