If you play the rules as written the game may become a long defensive standoff where players just work to prevent the next player from scoring. There can be some variations which seem to speed up play.

1) One change to speed up play is to allow each player to only make one move, even if they score a card. This will make the scoring go more quickly and shorten how far into the future you need to plan your tactics.

2) Lay the score cards out with a particular orientation (use the manufacturers mark to orient them all the same way) and require the players to arrange the balls in that order, i.e. the line of balls has one order and isn't reversible.

3) Enforce the implied rule that the players move must make a new pattern with the five balls in the center. This will prevent infinite loops of the same pattern. An example of a pattern that could allow people to enter infinite loops is: bb bbwww ww.
