I recently played a game against an opponent who's learned to play Blue Moon slightly unusually - not taught by me. Consequently we'd appreciate feedback on my opponent's play. So this is possible, here's the complete record of a campaign we just played (we took good notes). In order that you can concentrate on my opponent's play, I'm presenting it from my opponent's perspective with details of my hand as spoiler text. Of course you could comment on my play as well if you like, though I did manage to win the campaign 4-0 and 3-0. I played Vulca, my opponent played Hoax and played first.

OK, it's not a very exciting session report - I've deliberately not told you why I did what I did in order not to influence your replies. But if I get some feedback I'll try to reconstruct my thoughts. I don't have my opponent's logic, and I've also not commented on it either for the same reason (and, to be honest, I haven't reviewed it yet myself - but I will).

Now how to comment on my opponent's play. My suggestion is that basically each turn that my opponent took there was a decision what to play. I think it's more useful to consider all the cards played as a single decision. So the question can be posed as, of all those decisions, which do you agree with and which do you disagree with. As usual I suspect the latter is more interesting except when it was a close call. To help comments to be made, I've numbered these from #1 upwards. For convenience I continue the numbering in the second game.

This brings to mind something I've been thinking about doing - putting together a dual session report, with each player contributing their half, including what their hand was and what their thought processes were with each play. Obviously this would involve a lot of work, which is why it hasn't happened yet.

Anyhow, I'll be reading the entire report and commenting ASAP. Interesting approach, Christopher.

I'm going over this without looking at what was in your hand at any
time.

Game 1

Opponent's hand
Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05]
Demegodas the Odd [Hoax 12]
Sarogakanas the Ancient [Hoax 17]
Ballista of Confusion [Hoax 22]
Duplicator of Strength [Hoax 25]
Catusan [Terrah 05]

Opponent's turn #2
Retreat, I attract 1 dragon (1 dragon to me)

I often lead Sarogakanas in this case. Maybe he would have gotten lucky and nuked Lightning Bolts, maybe not.

Opponent's hand
Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05]
Demegodas the Odd [Hoax 12]
Sarogakanas the Ancient [Hoax 17]
Ballista of Confusion [Hoax 22]
Duplicator of Strength [Hoax 25]
Catusan [Terrah 05]

Opponent's turn #3
Catusan [Terrah 05]
5 Earth (1 active card)

Total nitpick but I might have started lower and saved Catusan for DoS.

Opponent's turn #6
Retreat, I attract 1 dragon (2 dragons to me)

Rough going. Not much he could have done up to this point. However...

Opponent's turn #7
Bethenitana the Storyteller [Hoax 11]
2 Earth (1 active card)

Ughh. I view Bethenitana as one of the strongest cards Hoax has and leading her this early in a fight doesn't accomplish anything but forcing Vulca to throw away a single character.

Opponent's turn #8
Enthrall Opposition [Hoax 28]
Retreat, I attract 0 dragons (2 dragons to me)

I can see why he'd retreat just to get some value out of Bethenitana, but why play Enthrall before the retreat? It doesn't accomplish anything except hurting your opponent, considering Wall of Fire, Fearsome Spirits, and others are still out there.

Opponent's turn #11
Hank Highflyer Hawk [Flit 12]
0 Earth (3 cards, 1 active)

Playing HHH alone didn't really accomplish anything here. Better to use him when he can either nuke a character (or characters) at a key time or when he can boost him with supports or boosters. As is, now all the Vulca player has to do is throw off a weak character and he's covered. (Curious - how come you didn't toss off a weaker character than Lavar? Planning in advance to play Charm, maybe?)

Opponent's turn #12
Penemikanas the Paranoid [Hoax 07]
Duplicator of Strength [Hoax 25]
6 Earth (5 cards, 2 active)

Nothing wrong here, but enough cards have been played that this is probably the time I'd start being wary about support card play since Cast Cataclysm is still out and about... i.e. no stacking or depending on a big bomb for a win.

Opponent's turn #13
Sarogakanas the Ancient [Hoax 17] discard Torch [Vulca 11] and Ember [Vulca 16]
Inscrutable Armor [Hoax 18]
1 Fire (2 active cards)

A few times this game your opponent used cards he didn't really have to, cards that would likely have had more effect played at other times. That's what Blue Moon is all about to me - using your weapons to their utmost. Now, your opponent played Inscrutable Armor when he didn't really have to, "wasting" his last shield.

Opponent's turn #14
Redamikanas the Cartographer [Hoax 10]
Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19]
4 Fire (4 cards, 2 active)

He needed something stronger here cus this led to the winning play. Knowing what you still have left potentially, I likely would have played Trigger + Thirkomedas + Brain Drain + Battling Boomerang instead. Note how useful Bethenitana, Inscrutable Armor, Enthrall Opposition, and/or HHH would have been at this time.

Game 2

Opponent's turn #16
Catusan [Terrah 05]
5 Earth (1 active card)

Good opening. It's strong enough that it's likely to force an instant retreat or early use of the mutant or shield (it did the latter).

My turn
Retreat, Opponent attracts 1 dragon (1 dragon to opponent)

So far so good.

Opponent's turn #18
Wogarathoras the Gloomy [Hoax 01]
Ballista of Confusion [Hoax 22]
6 Fire (2 active cards)

Good play. Could lead to HHH + Brain Drain (last card optional) for a guaranteed win...

My turn
Scorch the Inflammable [Vulca 03]
Fireblast [Vulca 18]
9 Fire (3 cards, 2 active)

...or not.

Opponent's turn #21
Muster Reinforcements [Hoax 27] draw Helkomedes the Rhetorician [Hoax 09], Redamikanas the Cartographer [Hoax 10], Sarogakanas the Ancient [Hoax 17], Trebuchet of Fear [Hoax 21] and Potion of Prodigious Passion [Pillar 26]
Sarogakanas the Ancient [Hoax 17] discard Elemental Enchantment [Vulca 20] and Summon Sorcerer [Vulca 28]
Trebuchet of Fear [Hoax 21]
3 Fire (2 active cards)

Great opening play and good discards, setting up for HHH + PPP. Unfortunately:

Opponent's turn #22
Redamikanas the Cartographer [Hoax 10]
2 Fire (2 cards, 1 active)

Hard to tell what his thoughts were, but this doesn't seem to accomplish anything except opening the door for Vulca.

After Vulca played, Hoax could again have ended the fight with HHH + PPP, but instead did:

Opponent's turn #23
Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05]
Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19]
5 Fire (4 cards, 2 active)

After you played Lavar + Gauntlets for 10 fire:

Opponent's turn #24
Retrieve Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05]
Retrieve Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19]
Hank Highflyer Hawk [Flit 12]
Homing Missiles [Hoax 24]
1 Fire (4 cards, 2 active)

Right idea, wrong mindset. Vulca is strong vs. support cards, i.e. more likely to be able to eliminate Homing Missiles and save himself. The booster (PPP) would have been the better choice both for its value as a booster and because it outvalues any support card Vulca could play, i.e. giving Hoax a guaranteed win.

Opponent's turn #25
Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05]
Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19]
6 Fire (6 cards, 3 active)

Whoops. That's 5 fire. Without looking beyond this point while typing this, I suspect Hoax is in a lot of trouble after letting Vulca slip through his fingers.

My turn
Cast Cataclysm [Vulca 30] discard Homing Missiles [Hoax 24]
Flamebreath the Dazzling [Vulca 01]
Pandemonium [Khind 26]
8 Fire (10 cards, 5 active)

Ow. The door narrows considerably.

Opponent's turn #27
Retreat, I attract 3 dragons (3 dragons to me)

Saw that coming. Moral of the story: Don't play around with Vulca when he's got Fearsome Spirits in play during a fire fight.

Next turn Vulca ran out of cards in his draw deck. That would have been a really nice time for Hoax to still have Redamikanas in an attempt to get back into this.

From here, Hoax got one back but that was endgame. Missing out on HHH + PPP turned this game around in a big way.

The Homing Missiles is still active, so it's 6, isn't it?

OK, adding my own comment, and one I didn't notice during play - getting on to game 2 seemed more interesting.

Quote:
Opponent's hand
Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05]
Thirkomedas the Serene [Hoax 13]
Genathones the Blind [Hoax 14]
Homing Missiles [Hoax 24]
Brain Drain [Hoax 26]
Trigger Brainstorm [Hoax 29]

Opponent's turn #15
Retrieve Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19]
Retreat, I attract 2 dragons (I win 4 crystals)

Am I missing something, or was this a premature concession? Couldn't my opponent play Trigger Brainstorm [Hoax 29], then Ciklarethas the Bitter [Hoax 05], Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19] and Homing Missiles [Hoax 24], giving a total of 6 fire (the target).

This isn't actually the reason for the request for feedback. I thought about seeing if anyone else spotted it, but as I should have done so earlier, I thought I'd get it in first. More feedback wanted though.

Yeah, didn't really check to see which cards remained active. Whoops. Something I do in my own session reports is list each and every card contributing toward the total power, even if I end up repeating myself on retrievable cards. Helps track what's going on a little better I think.

Also, yeah, it was a premature retreat. I looked at it but for some reason didn't count the retrieved missiles on first glance.

Haven't analyzed it as much as Jowjow, but I agree on the opening move in Game #1: I definitely would have played Sarogakonas. It begins a fight with a low-baller, meaning that you can draw many decks into a higher-card match-up than they want (i.e. the winner is going to get the bonus dragons for six cards.) That favors the Hoax because of the number of good supports that they have. It's not always the wisest thing to do against a smackdown deck like the Vulca or Terrah, because they could simply respond with a 6 or 7 and blow you out. But they could have done that, anyway, if you played something higher and then you'd be out the higher strength card and have lost the fight.

The added bonus to Sarogakonas is, of course, the discard. I was very, very fond of playing Black control in Magic and I really enjoyed controlling my opponent's hand. Sarogakonas lets you do this at the outset, which means you may end up pitching away the characters that your opponent needs to stay in the fight (or even in the game), especially since Vulca is often a deck with which you can easily start and continue a fight with only two characters in hand.

That same perspective follows with the opening of Game #2. Hoax is not a smackdown deck, having nothing over 5. It's a control deck. Pitching Catusan out there to win the fight worked this time, but it's not something I would make a habit of.

Game 1

Opponent's turn #1
Ledinemras the Monk [Hoax 03]
4 Fire (1 active card)
Odd that he starts a Fire fight with Duplicator of Strength in his hand. I would have opened with Sarogakanas (at 1 Earth) to weaken him and get it used, with an eye to following up with Ciklarethas and the Duplicator, a combo that threatens 6 earth repeatedly. Or just start with Ciklarethas, if you want to save the discard ability.

Draws
Catusan [Terrah 05]
Definately a bad time to be in a Fire fight.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #3
Catusan [Terrah 05]
5 Earth (1 active card)
With Catusan, I would have definately gone with Saragakanas, as above, with an eye to building a 2 dragon Earth win.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #4
Demegodas the Odd [Hoax 12]
Ballista of Confusion [Hoax 22]
4 Fire (3 cards, 2 active)
Probably not going to be able to use both Demegodas and Ciklarethas in this fight. This is probably the better choice, as I find Cidlarethas more useful in my hand.

Quote:
My turn
Cinder [Vulca 14] discard Ballista of Confusion [Hoax 22]
At least one of the support discarders is gone.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #7
Bethenitana the Storyteller [Hoax 11]
2 Earth (1 active card)
Again, no Sorogakanas. I'll stop kveching about it now.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #8
Enthrall Opposition [Hoax 28]
Retreat, I attract 0 dragons (2 dragons to me)
shake Tossing Entrhall Opposition to get the extra draw not a good play. Two better options. Play Entrall, Thirkomedas and the Duplicator to match, with Ciklarithas (and 3 new cards) in hand to continue. Or just retreat to kill Pandemonium.

Quote:

Muster Reinforcements [Hoax 27]
Make that 7 new cards.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #9
Muster Reinforcements draw Wogarathoras the Gloomy [Hoax 01], Penemikanas the Paranoid [Hoax 07], Inscrutable Armor [Hoax 18], Brain Drain [Hoax 26] and Hank Highflyer Hawk [Flit 12]
Wogarathoras the Gloomy [Hoax 01]
5 Fire (1 active card)
With Hank, the Mutant and the Armor in hand, this is a good time for a Fire Fight, although with no Booster/Support with values, Hank is not at his best. I might have started with Penemikanas, in order to increase the chance of a 2 dragon win, and to get him out of my hand.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #10
Var-dis-Nar [Mutant 105]
4 earth {shield} (2 cards, 1 active)
A shame, but with Lightning Bolts, Fireblast, and the Gauntlets played, only Flamebreath will give another opportunity to play Var-dis-Nar. If there were more ways to get 7 left in the Vulca deck, I would prefer to play Sarogakanas or Penemikanas with the armor here.

Quote:
My turn
Summon Sorcerer [Vulca 28] retrieve Lavar the Powerful [Vulca 04]
Aaralia-Aqua Secunda[Aqua 04]
4 Earth (2 cards, 1 active)
Have to question your play here, in not retrieving the Gauntlets. You are ahead in dragons, and still have 2 good Earth cards in your draw pile. And his Mutant is now gone. I would have considered retrieving the Gauntlets, and playing Spark and the armor to get 2 draws.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #11
Hank Highflyer Hawk [Flit 12]
0 Earth (3 cards, 1 active)
A waste of Hanks talents. Penimikanas and the Duplicator is better and gets him closer to being able to draw again.

Quote:
My turn
Lavar the Powerful [Vulca 04]
0 Earth (3 cards, 1 active)
Not Volca? I know you want to use Charm Holy Dragon, but wouldn't that leave you more flexibility? As it turns out it forces out the Duplicator, so it end well for you.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #12
Penemikanas the Paranoid [Hoax 07]
Duplicator of Strength [Hoax 25]
6 Earth (5 cards, 2 active)
The duplicator at last, but only 5 cards.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #13
Sarogakanas the Ancient [Hoax 17] discard Torch [Vulca 11] and Ember [Vulca 16]
Inscrutable Armor [Hoax 18]
1 Fire {shield} (2 active cards)
His draw pile is has only 6 weak characters left, but 4 good supports and the potion. Thirkomedas without the armor, using this turns combo as a follow up, is the other option.

Quote:
My turn
Ignite [Vulca 09]
Fearsome Spirits [Vulca 27]
2 Fire (3 cards, 2 active)
The game is now on the line.

Quote:
Opponent's turn #15
Retrieve Battling Boomerang [Hoax 19]
Retreat, I attract 2 dragons (I win 4 crystals)
Instead of losing, Retrive Boomerangs, Play Trigger Brainstorm, Chiklarethas, Brain Drain, Homing Missiles, and Boomerangs for 6 fire and hope to draw the Tome.

I may comment on the 2nd game later.

Besides losing when he didn't have to, as you and others have now noted, he missed several chances to try to build to a 2 dragon win. You cannot be content to just continue a fight in Blue Moon, you have to try to win them. He had bad luck in not drawing any supports with values to use with Hank when he played Muster Reinforcements.

I thought about this, and usually I would make the other choice. And the way it went it might have been better too. And thus you're probably right. But my reasoning was I'm 2 dragons up, and am planning on playing Charm Holy Dragon as soon as I can to be three up (and to seriously refresh my hand). It's an earth fight and if I can win it I can win the game, and at the moment Volcanic Gauntlets are dead weight. And if I play Charm Holy Dragon I'm a bit character light. So I think the key question is what are my odds of winning this fight? As it turned out, bad, which is against my play.

Quote:

Someone else queried the same play, why not play soft after Hank Highflyer Hawk? But as soon as my opponent next plays a character HHH is covered and my opponent now needs to match my full power. I'm playing for as much pressure here as I can manage, I want to win this fight, or failing that push him. Now maybe that's right, maybe it's wrong, but that was my thinking. (Note that I've never claimed to be a great player, I just know a few of the rules.)
