I would like to teach this game to my ESL students, but I'm not sure myself of the correct pronunciation of the title. blush Perhaps someone could finish this sentence for me: "Catan rhymes with..."

No, I'm kidding.

I was gonna say you pronounce it like "Satan," only with a C.

Seriously, I think it rhymes with "the can," or "it's Stan" or something like that.

If you just say "Cat" and "an" that's pretty much it. Put the accent on the second syllable. Catan rhymes with ratan. Good luck with the ESL work!

Drew, do you really know how to pronounce it? I would guess it either rhymes with "Satan" or "baton" depending on its global location, but there are other ways it could be pronounced. How do the publishers pronounce it?

That's how I say it too, but that's pretty much just because it's what I've heard around. Do you have some authoritative source for knowing it's pronounced that way? (Just wondering.)

I thought I read or heard once that the proper pronunciation is actually "Kah-tawwn". That, as a result, is how I pronounce it. (Not that that's worth much.)

Catan /kə'tan/ rhymes with baton /bə'tan/ works for me. (Milwaukee, WI Dialect, AmE)

Isn't it named for the planet Captain Picard lived on in "The Inner Light"? It should be pronouned like that, rhyming with "baton".

In Germany it is pronounced ka'ta:n. First 'a' is short, second is longer, the stress is on the second syllable, and the 'a's are pronounced like in the word 'mama'... HTH

yeah I agree; rhymes with baton. If you don't know how to say baton, then just say kA-tahn. Emphasis on the first syllable.

In the UK we like to think we are following the German pronounciation, so this reply agrees with our usage. I would write it phonetically as: ka-TARN (as in darn)
