2v2 Team Variant

Background
I love this game as is. It's a masterpiece that should not be touched in a lot of ways. However, I also have a group of Axis and Allies buddies who love playing team games in general, hence the creation of this variant.

Setup
Separate 4 players into teams of 2, USSR and USA. Each player numbers off, with player 1 and 2 comprising of the USSR team, and player 3 and 4 comprising of the USA team. Basically, an 'even' and an 'odd' player on both teams.

Early War Cards Dealt
All players are dealt up to 3 cards (net total of 6 cards a piece). Each turn comprises of headline + 4 action rounds (thus one card will be held). This is to shorten the inevitable analysis team paralysis that would lengthen a game. The headline card may be played by either player on a team; however, players alternate playing cards on even and odd action rounds. The action rounds alternate players, with 'even' players having to play on 'even' action rounds, and 'odd' players having to play on 'odd' action rounds. If a 'even/odd' player has no cards to play on his given action round, his partner may play a card if he or she has one. However, for the purposes of card effects that refer to a "hand", treat the team's combined hand as the "hand" (Grain Sales to Soviets, Five Year Plan, UN intervention etc). The action round increases to 5 in mid-war, and the combined team hand size grows to 7 cards - on even turns the 7th card is dealt to the 'even' player, on odd turns the 7th card is dealt to the 'odd' player.

Defcon 1 and Accidental Scoring Card Held
This is another measure to lessen the analysis paralysis and account for the fact that it's harder to coordinate alternate sets of hands on one side. If Defcon is reduced to one, the phasing side does not lose immediately but instead the other side gains 8 VPs immediately. If a scoring card is accidentally held at the end of the action round, the other side gains 8 VPs immediately and the scoring card is scored immediately and Europe Win effect, if applicable, does not occur for the side that held the scoring card in error - score as Europe domination only.

I like this concept. Conceptually, it would represent the governing coalition of the nation, and the fact that no leader is truly absolute without cooperation and concessions from somewhere

It seems really nice!
@elitesix, any update on that variant? Does it still work well as first described?
