for those who live in Germany, here are some links:

but seriously though, these figures are made of flexible plastic. they don't break easily, even if you throw them against the wall. I let my son (2 years old) play with the larger Descent minis, which are made of the same plastic, and nothing ever happens. obviously some are more fragile than others, like the probe droids or the blasters on the AT-ST.

I am in the exact same boat. I still need to get Twin Shadows but I have everything else (Wave 3-5 are on preorder)

I have the same problem with Descent too. I am trying to figure out the best solution to store them. I would like to paint them eventually (once I learn how) so something that will protect them is a must.

I have had a handful of Descent minis break already on me (so they are not invincible)

So far I found a couple of storage cases at Michael's that I am thinking of getting some pluck and pull foam to to create foam trays for the figures

I am getting the foam for both the core and twin shadows from KR Multicase. That one listed about looks similar to battlefoam. I have that one to fit in the core box and it does not fit right. I have their foam for star wars x-wing and love it. So I am getting that for Imperial Assault.

I use Plano Storage boxes to sort components from many of my games. Can't get much cheaper than these.

For Imperial Assault I've got all my painted minifigs in one Plano 3700 sized box while the other small components are in a second.

Probably not quite a protective as foam but if you clear coat your paint jobs and have your game sitting on the shelf 99% of the time, I'm not sure you need the expense and bulk of foam.

I think that this is the best option:

Not done yet, but I have a low cost selfmade solution made out of cardstock in mind to protect my (not yet) painted figures. Still only a thought in my head, if you monitor my website, you'll see when it's done. And you'll find other IA stuff there, too (like tuckboxes for cards and tokenboxes for, well, tokens. Currently working on a solution for the tiles...)

These art bins are at Joanns in the US for $20. But, I just wait for the monthly coupons my wife gets for 1/2 off and get these bins for $10. The top one has all the core figs and skirmish cards, and the bottom one has all the Twin Shadows figs and campaign related cards (or it does now, these pics were taken awhile ago).

Did you purchase those? Good quality?

Feldherr make some decent stuff - as well as that one that fits in the box, you can get their regular foam, you pluck out bits you need to make the holes whatever shape you want. I then keep the foam trays in the big cardboard boxes they also sell. Descent currently spans two of these boxes, I'll move IA over to the same system once there's enough units that they're a pain to sort.

It's the 9101 Artbin from Joann's in the US. It doesn't fit in the core box unfortunately but it has a ton of room! All of my figures (every figure through wave 3 & extras I purchased) easily fit in 2 of these. Some figs (like the Royal Guards) have to lay flat because they're too tall but most fit no problem. They stack nicely (they are pretty thin) and hold all of the cards. The core box itself has a small case inside for tokens & dice. The map tiles, rule books, and everything else fits in there comfortably in ziplocs.
