So been watching some excellent Let's Plays and both use Dunwich with the base game and say it's a much improved game with that expansion at a minimum.

Am I crazy to try to play AH with Dunwich my very first time? Solo with a few adventurers...

Yes. Well, not if you have any expectations about winning. Dunwich is really, really hard...

I am a big Dunwich fan, but there is enough to learn without it... I would recommend a few games with just the base board to get a feel for the mechanics before throwing in the new board.

However, you can use most elements of Dunwich in your first game, as they don't change anything rules wise...the Investigators, Ancient Ones, and all the small cards (Spells, Unique Items, Common Items, Skills and Allies) can be used in any game with no increase in complexity.

Also, the Injury and Madness cards improve the flow of the game greatly, and their rules are simple.

The extra board, though, will make wining the game more difficult, and learning more difficult. Once you've learned to win on the base board, it quickly becomes too easy. That is the time to add Dunwich. For your fist few games, leave the Dunwich map, Location Encounters, Other World cards and Mythos cards in the box.

This is the key part. Most features of the big box expansions might be considered modular. With few exceptions, any given part of the expansion can be used without the need to include the other parts. Adding the Dunwich map to the board is a bad idea for a beginning game. The rest of the Dunwich is pretty straight forward and is probably fine to include.

Hard? Try Innsmouth.

As others have said, you don't have to add everything. Investigators, items, skills and injury & madness cards can be used in every game.

My best suggestion is to only ever read the encounter cards when you need to, that way the game stays fresh for a very long time.

Enjoy.

IIRC, Dunwich introduced Gate Bursts, so you may not want to use the Mythos cards from it in your first few games.

Why not play the base game first? Less work to set up and tear down.

Agreed with others, play the base game some to get used to it, then the time spent with the expansion(s) can just be dealing with the expansions. Seen many people try this with other games & just a nightmare bouncing between a new game plus many expansions on figuring out rule questions.

From some of the bigger expansions, the characters & maybe some of the items/spell/artifacts should be good to add to the base game whenever as they won't change things much but you might want to look through them first*. Then later you can keep the expansions separate to see what to go with for the base game to see how different they are.

*Check to see if it references anything specific on the expansion.

I would suggest using base game + Injury and Madness cards fro Dunwich for the first games. Injury and Madness are a very nice addition, that many people use with whatever setup and expansion sets they are using at the moment. They are that good.
