Since we hadn’t played Pandemic in a while (I start way too many reports writing something like that…) we immediately messed up the rules. We drew our starting hands before choosing our roles. Also, we decided to draw three roles each, and then choose from that.
One player ended up with three yellow cards in his starting hand, and quickly chose the Epidemiologist. Meanwhile, I was a bit disappointed as I drew three of the roles from the base game, finally settling on the Medic. Not what I had hoped for in our first game with “On the Brink” mixed in…
The final player went with the Containment Specialist.
The initial setup set asia ablaze with disease, but left the rest of the world fairly untouched. None the less, we stuck to our original plan (aided by our initial cheat) and remained close to Atlanta on the first turn, so that our Epidemiologist could take two more yellow cards. The yellow disease had a cure on turn two, and was eradicated by the Epidemiologist shortly thereafter.
Unfortunately, this made a mess of Asia. The first card we drew was an Epidemic, so we quickly saw two outbreaks for the red disease. Even with yellow out of the picture, things were looking bleak.
I was using my Medic to keep red in check, while the Containment Specialist, contained the black disease. Even with two roles that were well suited for this task, we still saw another red outbreak, followed by a blue one.
With half of the outbreaks having happened already, victory felt far away, but some incredibly lucky draws gave the Containment specialist five red cards. With the help of a Special Event, we were able to not only find a cure for red, but also eradicate it.
This made things turn around completely. We effectively kept black and blue in check while we gathered more cards. On the same turn that I got my fifth blue card, another Special Event made sure that I had a Research Center in the city I was visiting.
We hadn’t seen many black cards until this point, so the odds of drawing said cards were in our favour. Again, some lucky draws and use of the Epidemiologists ability made sure we got the last cure very quickly after the blue one.
So even though things looked really bad until mid game, a bit (a lot, to be honest) of cheating and a few lucky draws gave us the victory. Maybe I could even claim that the victory was a bit easy. But that’s cheating for you (even if it was an accident…)
