Hello, I am looking for a good card game for me and my wife that plays in 60 minutes or less, 30-45 is better. We have only played Rummy in the past, but since discovering all these games out there (I had no idea!). I thought find another game to try.

Not looking for a sex game.

Not looking for a WWII game (Civil or before might be okay).

Not really interested in fantasy like Magic or Warcraft.

Not required to be kid friendly, but not looking for filth either.

Just need a fun game that takes strategy, some randomness, and fun. (I like Bang!, for example, but it is only four players and above.)

Thank you for any help.

From what I have seen, most people tend to recommend Lost Cities for someone in your circumstances. I have yet to play the game.
If you would be interested in a non-card game for two players that is great I can highly recommend Carolus Magnus. The game is simple to learn, and is always a brain burner.

Good Luck!

My wife and I enjoy:

Lost Cities
Odin's Ravens
Balloon Cup

All three use card-based play, can be learned quickly, play in about 15 minutes per game, and offer enough strategic depth to remain interesting over the long term.

For me and my wife, Carcassonne (with Inns & Cathedrals expansion) and San Juan have been great games. Ticket to Ride as well. My wife's favorite has been Carcassone. She loves, loves, loves it. Any of those 3 would be great pick-ups, I'd say.

Good luck,
Rob

Yes, I think you will love Lost Cities. I've played many games with my wife; it's a quick playing game and nicely portable too.
You might also enjoy Rosenkonig, though it's not a card game.
San Juan has worked well for the two of us, too.
Started a game of the Settlers Card game a while ago and it looked like it was going to be fun too, but never got to finish the game.
Hive is another good two-player game, though some find it a little cerebral.

My wife and I have been enjoying the following recently:

Jambo - A bit of randomness in the cards but a fair amount of strategy
San Juan - same applies for this one
Fjords - Nice two player, tile-layer
Carcassonne - More strategic 2 player
Attika - Nice looking game with excellent 2 and 3 player
Blue Moon City - Nice card/board game, always close
Ingenious - Nice abstract game

You can't miss with Lost Cities. My daughter and I have three games we play a lot that vary in depth and complexity:
Lost Cities -- light
Caesar and Cleopatra -- light/medium
Jambo -- medium
All are good and one will fit the mood you are in.

Also try:
Bohnanza
Carcassonne
Battleline
Blokus -- play two colors apiece
Alhambra -- this seems to be a real favorite among the women of my family
Colossal Arena
Shear Panic
Big City

These are all fun games for 2. Hope this helps.

Yep, San Juan plays well with two. Make sure that you notice the rule changes for the Library and the turn order when playing as a couple. The bonus for San Juan is that it's also a lot of fun with 3 and 4.

Lost Cities is pretty much the must-have first couples game. It's cheap; it's good; it'll be worth the cash.

The Mystery Rummy series would also work. They're fairly close to traditional rummy, but with some twists to make things more interesting.

I know it's not striclty a card game but I would recommend The Downfall of Pompeii. It's for 2-4 players but it works great as a 2-player game. My wife requests it almost daily.

I'd also have to agree on Lost Cities, as well as Settlers of Catan Card Game. The Catan board game might work ok too--there are some variants for two players out there--but the length of the game might nix it.

Cribbage is excellent two-player game. You can usually find affordable cribbage boards at big-box stores, and even the occasional drug store. Or you could keep score with poker chips if you have enough on hand.

Carcassonne is another good choice, especially because you could play as a couple or with friends. Guillotine is another 2-5 player game that might work for you.

Hera and Zeus is yet another two-player game from the Kosmos line. It's a card-based version of Stratego, but a little more interesting, I think.

If you want to try abstracts: Abalone, Quarto, and Chase. The last two can be cobbled together at home if you don't want to spend money finding them.

"Mr Jack" is the best two players game I have ever played, forgetting abstracts games of course.
Smart, fun and with a lot of replayability.

Jambo and San Juan are the best, although they're also the most sophisticated 2 player games.

Kahuna, Odins and Lost Cities are also very good (the Kosmos 2 player series is a good bet), and I agree with Attika and Mr Jack in particular.

Lastly, for a more abstract feel, try Clans or Torres and you won't be disappointed.

Enjoy!

the top 5 in this order are

1) Mr. Jack simply the best
2) Attika like Settlers meets Ticket to Ride
3) The Downfall of Pompeii A Very good 2-player that plays well with 3-4 also
4) Lost Cities A must have
5) Odin's Ravens Very good race game

Best of luck

My favorites for light 2 player games are Blokus (super easy rules) & Odin's Ravens. I agree that the Kosmos series is a good place to find spouse games. The other Kosmos we agree on is Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation. We also like Star Wars: Clash of the Lightsabers, but that is probably hard to find. Another simple rules abstract is Ta Yu. A Civil War game that works well is Battle Cry. Many spouses prefer less opposition. You'll soon find out what works for you.

Carcassonne is good two player game -
The main game has a numbeer of supplements available and offers more variety perhaps in the long term but the stand-alone variant Hunters and Gatherers is well balanced and looks good too.

You can download and play Punch! for free. It is a boxing game for two that is very fast and quite fun to play. You can squeeze 3-5 matches in 30 minutes. It is in line with the games you already enjoy. If you do play it, let us know what you think of it.
