THE POOR GAMER

A BUILD IT YOURSELF CLASSIC - 3M’S BREAKTHRU (1965)

What you will need:
- An 11x11 graph (graph paper) make each block big enough to hold you counters. Draw a heavy boarder around the perimeter of the middle 5x5 boxes, and draw a circle in the exact center box. Gold Team must deploy in the center 5X5, the Gold Flagship must deploy in the exact center of the playing area.
- 12 pennies, 1 Nickel (represents the gold team)
- 20 dimes (represents the silver team)

If you have an old A&A set, you could use German units and Soviet units (instead of coins) to give it the theme of trying to break thru an encirclement.

Object:
Gold Team: Move your flagship to the outer perimeter of the playing field.
Silver Team: Capture the gold flagship

Rules:

Synopsis; ha, there isn’t much to summarize, the rules are printed in the box top and in a large font to boot.

Setup
1. Flip a coin to determine the Gold Fleet Commander.
2. Gold player deploys his flagship to the center box and places the remaining 12 units in the central area.
3. Silver player places their 20 units in any of the boxes outside the central area.
Note only one unit may be in any one box.
*There is no ‘fixed set up’ – any unit, anywhere, as long as they meet the above criteria.

Play
1. Gold decides who will go first.
2. Play alternates with each player doing TWO moves or ONE capture.
Exception: When the flagship moves only one move or capture is made.
Play continues until one side wins.

Movement
A player must move two units*. Units move any number of free boxes horizontally or vertically (like a rook in chess but you can not capture an enemy unit if you chose a movement turn).
· Exception: When the flagship moves only one move is made.

Capture
On a capture turn a player may capture one enemy unit by moving a friendly unit into an enemy unit one box diagonally in any direction (like a pawn’s capture move in chess).

Question: Must the flagship land on a safe spot when reaching the outer boundary i.e. a spot where it can no be subsequently captured?

As I recall, no. I only needs to escape - make it to the outer rows.
