I have both this and the expansion

I think it looks like a nice / filler game

My worry is that if we play 8 players – it may last forever

Any experienced players able to give me an idea how long a game takes with 5 ppl [and how long each extra player might add to the game]

Would love it if we could play two 8 player games in an hour

The only reason I worry is that I saw a video [DiceTower] where GameBoyGeek suggests [when playing 8 players] that he only plays TWO rounds instead of the usual FOUR because of the amount of time it takes.

How does two rounds [instead of four] feel. Would it feel like you were only playing half of a game [?]

Sorry for all the questions – I just like to introduce games in a light that means they are less like to arrive D.O.A. – so any feedback from people who have played this game [especially at higher player counts] would be most welcome

Have not played a shortened game so have no input for that at all. I have played a full 5-player game and it was just a bit over an hour. No way to do two 5-player games in an hour let alone two 8-player games in that length of time.

Yikes

Thanks for that

The box [base game] says 30 mins

So I was hoping in less than 1hr 30mins we could get two 8 player games in... but that seems unlikely now

Having not played the game - it seems like the game wouldn't take so long [5 player] - so that is most helpful

So thanks again

It often takes a bit of consideration where to place the dice and since it is often good strategy to place one die at a time when possible, it can take several rounds before everyone is out of dice. Then there are four rounds of play. With experienced players you could get a round in 8 min with 5 players, but that is still a min of 40 minutes for a full game and 80 minutes for two full games at 5 players. With 8 players it would be at an hour per game.

So with experienced players that would be around 60 mins for one 8 player game

So... if I were to make it 3 rounds [instead of four rounds] that would in theory make it 45 mins for 8 players [who are experienced]

Two games in just over 90 mins

My question would be - do you lose a lot of the 'game' by reducing it to 3 rounds. I don't just mean the game is 25% shorter... I mean does that change strategy/feel/play/etc

As that may be a good compromise

I feel playing 2 rounds is too brutally short

4 would probably feel too long anyway [maybe over kill]

So maybe 3 rounds is perfect?

As I plan to play a mostly vanilla 8 player game [3 rounds]

Than another game [3 rounds] but adding in one thing from the expansions each round

If I can get it done in 90 ish mins .... then ppl won't be just playing this all night and we can get in a game of something I know they enjoyed from another night... and leaving them wanting more... [hmm, 'leaving [them wanting more] Las Vegas'

Thanks again

Can't answer about shorter game. Every game (about 40) that I've played with Las Vegas has been by the printed rules. It feels the right length to me but I've never played beyond 6. But I doubt I would feel like I had much of a chance to recover from a bad round with just 3 instead of 4 rounds.

Arhh

So prob best to stick to 4 rounds - so their is less variance [in a dice game hmm]

But yeah the more rounds the more luck will even out and skill will be shown... though that's likely to need several 100k rounds to reach

I've played 8 with the expansion.

Make certain you add the 100k cards and go with the card setup for 8 (in the expansion rules).

It goes quick enough that it is still a filler. Four rounds is still good.

Ok. So here is some feedback for others.

We played 8 players

Two games

First game was vanilla – only added 100k notes and jackpot ‘7th casino’

Second game was with – action cards, bonus cards, 100k notes and jackpot ‘casino’

Started around 7:30pm and finished around 11pm

So 3hr 30mins in total

I guess first game might have been slower [getting to see how the game played], and the second game was slower as we added a few bits. Maybe they both ran the same length.

We had one slow player. The rest all seemed around the same pace.

So I guess 8 players, 4 rounds – lasts around 1 hour and 45 minutes

We go on until nearly 1am – so managed to get some other quicker games in.

But at 8 players I wouldn’t call this a filler game. Would be hard to get this game in [with that player count] if it wasn’t the ‘new’ [main] game of the week – in our group we have one new game each week [then play games we like from previous weeks]

Not to review it properly – but it’s ok [as a game] – but a bit meh. And for the time it takes, I would think it’s hard to think it’s worth playing.

Thanks everyone for their help

I enjoy Las Vegas very much but not 3 hours and 30 minutes very much. Wow!

Oh quick tip... get a dice tower

On first roll [of the the first player, in the first game] I thought uh - oh [as dice went everywhere, and off the table]

Luckly a firend brought me a present from Essen of a dice tower

Without the dice tower you would have to add more time onto the game length

I cannot even imagine a game taking that long. It should have been less than half that time...even with 8.

I know it seems crazy

I do remember GameBoyGeek - saying that they only play [when 8 players] 2 rounds [instead of 4] to keep the game to one hour

Lets say each persons turn takes an average of 1 minute

That includes rolling/thinking/placing dice/playing action cards/etc

I guess some turns [with less dice take less, and others longer]

How many turns do people have each round... I guess an average of 4. Some will have more, I doubt many people will have less than 4 rolls each round.

1 minute a turn, 4 turns a round, 8 players

1 x 4 x 8 = 32 minutes a round

4 rounds = 128 minutes

Obviously that doesn't include putting money on the casinos or counting up at the end... etc

Playing with 8 people [a full four rounds] - I really doubt you would do it in 'less than half the time' - 52 minutes or less???

It really doesn't seem likely.

You would have to have a group that both understands the game [so know the rules very well and don't lose time in any way at all] AND at the same time as being experts in the rules of the game - they would need to be very bad at the game. They would have to straight away always play the most dice they have [of any number] on that casino - without thinking.

My guess is you are wrong because you haven’t played with 8 players and think it won't add much time to your groups game length ????

We use dice cups. Everyone throws dice simultaneously, but only the active player reveals. The other players can peek under their cups and plan their moves ahead of time. Makes it move a bit faster. Some trust is needed as a die sometimes end up on top of other dice and needs to be moved. But then cheating is not something we do?

Ok

But takes away some of the 'fun'

Needing to roll a 6 on last roll and a 2 will give a tie and the money to last placed person on the 2 casino, etc

Then us all watching the rollers pain or glory roll

I'm sure there are ways to speed up games but in doing so you will lose some of the 'game'

Takes away some of the fun....yeah, I agree. When we play with fewer players we still use cups (just love them I guess), but with an instant reveal. With 7 (haven't tried 8 yet) the game can drag a bit.

Yeah

For 8 players [full game] it is NOT a filler game

And as I said when you don't look at it as a filler game - there's not much 'game' there to justify getting it out

Not a bad game

Just not worth nearly two hours for one game of it

But I have a couple of people who seem to enjoy dice games - so on the rare nights we get 6 or less people round [and one of them is there] I can drag it out as a second or third game that week [the first one each week being a new game]

Has anyone considered playing with 1 dice less for each player when playing 6+ players?
