I want to get a game for my two nephews aged 11 and 9, but which could be enjoyed by grownups too. They currently enjoy playing Risk and Catan. I was thinking Alhambra or Stone Age. Any other ideas?
A game without much text would be great, as English is not their first language (although a little bit of text here and there would not hurt either - hoping it might motivate them to study for their English courses) Thanks!

Are you looking for more of a Euro type game? Alhambra seems a bit dry for 9 and 11.

King of Tokyo is a common recommendation.
DC Deck Builder
Survive: Escape from Atlantis

<edit> KoT might not be the best with only 2.

Splendor
Carcassonne
The Little Prince: Make Me a Planet

No reading necessary on any of those. I've played them successfully with children.

King of Tokyo - there's English text, but adult with them can explain it as they go along.
Survive!
Indigo
Pyramid of Pengqueen(probably hard to get, but just in case)
Walk the Plank
Pitchcar
Bang dice game (needs at least 4 players)

stacking games - Catch a Falling Star, animal upon animal, Ka-Boom
speed games - Jungle Speed, Spot it!, Geistesblitz, Gloobz, Panic lab

Sorry, but I wouldn't wish Stone Age on a 13 y.o. let alone a 9 or 11. Kids I've played with love dynamic games - stacking, speed, dice rolling.

Check Drei Magier Spiele (like the magic labyrinth), Zoch (riff raff, sushi go, pickomino).

Fleet Commander Ignition, its got spaceships and what boys don't like spaceships. They game is quick, easy to learn and very little writing outside the manual which doesn't need much referencing once you have a handle on the rules. Can be found cheap on Ebay just now

Maybe I am to late, but I play a lot with my 10-year old child. He is studying English, but it is not his first language. In some games I have put sleeves on the cards and added home-made translations in the sleeves so we have more games to chose from.

He loves Alhambra and Stone Age. Those are the ones he suggest himself.

He also likes co-op games like Castle Panic (with the expansion/expansions) and Mice and mystics.

We also recently tried Pandemic, Small world and Dominion and he liked those aswell.

So I think it is hard to tell in general what kids would like. They are as much individuals as adults. But I would strongly recommend a co-op so you get away from the sore loser part (fortunatelly my oldest can take a defeat, but my youngest can not)

Thank you Eva! I've already bought them Forbidden Island, but your recommendations will come in handy fairly soon again.
