My Bausack version has string attached to some small pieces. They don't seem to fit in with the rest of the look of the game.

Common mistake - that thing with the string (sort of a square piece plus a peg) is the measuring device for resolving the question of who has the tallest construction.

The clothes pin is used to mark the height of the highest (so far) tower. Then you can see easily if someone else has built a taller tower.
The rules say 'tallest tower at some time' so the winner's tower might have collapsed, but they could still win in this variant.
