After some discussion with my group about how powerful firearms are in the game, we decided to try to add a bit of realism with a house rule. We figured most of the guns of the period would be flintlocks or similar, and thus hard to reload in combat.

So we came up with the following rule:
A firearm can only be used once per round, and is reloaded at the start of your next turn. Turn the card on its side to signify the firearm has been used.

We found this gives added depth and strategy to combat. Do you come in and immediately shoot that nuisance? Or do you charge a foe in melee, saving your shot for when another pirate inevitably charges you? It also makes cards with two firearms more interesting.

My group has played it this way for about 5 games now, and we don't intend to turn back. What do you think about the rule? Do you find it helps survivability on the battlefield?
