1975 World Series Replay
Cincinnati Reds vs. Boston Red Sox

Stingy pitching by Bill “Spaceman” Lee coupled with a 12 hit BoSox hit attack powered a 5 to 2 victory over HoF manager Sparky Anderson’s Cincinnati Reds in Game 1. In this complete game mound gem Lee fanned 6 Reds batters against no walks and neatly spread out 10 safeties without giving out any extra base hits. On the other hand Lefty Lee’s counterpart, Southpaw Don Gullett, struck out 11 Sox batters against just 1 base on balls but yielded 12 hits in his 8 inning stint on the bump. Hitting stars for the Red Sox were DH Juan Beniquez who went 3 for 4 and scored 2 runs. Fred Lynn, Jim Rice and Rico Petrocelli all had 2 safties apiece against 4 at bats. Hitting stars for the Reds were George Foster in his 3 for 4 effort and rookie DH Doug Flynn who went 2 for 4 in his first World Series. The biggest Reds threat came in the 3rd with 3 straight singles by Foster, Flynn and Perez after a lead off fly out by HoF catcher Johnny Bench but Lee managed to pull himself together by striking out Ken Griffey Sr. and then getting Dave Concepcion to neatly ground out on his famous Lee-phis pitch.
