hello.
i search boardgames, where the players or one player can play the evil side. i dont mean overlord-games (descent, heroquest) and party-games (werewolf, merlin, resistance, shadow hunters...). i like dark and creepy visuals. games i own, that would match:

-chaos in the old world (like the visuals)
-dungeon lords (dungeon builder, like it)
-loot & scoot (same as dungeon lords, but not so good)
-boss monster 1&2 (fun dungeon-builder)
-cave evil (like the visuals)
-a touch of evil (dont own and its not my taste of game)
-zombiaki (funny)
-apokalypse (i dislike the game)
-hecatomb (tcg)
-warhammer invasion (dark elves or other badasses. lcg).

did you have recommendations?

The Bloody Inn murdering guests in your own inn, evil

Middle-Earth Quest
War of the Ring
Because you don't get to be Sauron every day

Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
Much better than Zombicide simply because one player gets to be the zombies

Fury of Dracula (Second Edition)
More like Flight of Dracula for the most part, but you do play the Count himself.

Ghost Stories + Ghost Stories: Black Secret
The expansion adds a fifth player as the Bad Boss himself.

Horus Heresy (2010) ?
You'd likely have to be invested in 40k lore enough to see Horus as actually 'evil'

Winter Tales
Evil vs Good conflict that the players act out. Caveat is it's less of a game and more of a storytelling exercise.

EDIT:
Cthulhu Wars, obviously!
Although you just battle other deities, no butchering/sacrificing innocent bystanders...

Not mentioning hidden traitor games because you can't really roleplay your evil in those, at least until you're revealed.

I thought about that one, but while it's not totally abstract, you don't actually get any sense of Jack's evil from the game, it's just hiding and running enveloped in cute graphics.

Letters from Whitechapel is a different beast, though, there you actually do commit atrocities in the name of evil...

Battle for Souls. One side plays as the devil(s) trying to corrupt souls to bring them to hell. The other side plays heaven.

I might also include Last Night on Earth where one or two players play as the zombies. But I'm not sure if that falls into your 'overlord' category.

You can be the aliens in Level 7 [Omega Protocol].
Basically a dungeon crawler but with commandos and aliens.
As the aliens you get to set traps and pop up in air vents etc. Fun game imo.

This is one of the games I meant earlier when I said I'm not mentioning 'hidden' traitor games. The traitor here is not hidden per se, but at the start of the game you don't know who it will be (or if there will be one at all, even though there usually is).

The problem with it is that you can't choose who the evil player will be or know what kind of evil they will represent before you're well into the game. Sometimes you get players that dislike being re-cast as the baddie. But if you're willing to let the game take you for a ride, sure it's fun and someone gets to be bad :-)

Probably not what you are looking for, but if you believe that colonialism is evil, this is a dark look at being a colonialist:

Frankenstein's Bodies? Visually fitting I think. And with body parts potentially ending up in a dumpster and people dragging them around and stealing them I think it fits the theme too

There's no darkness in Archipelago, or colonialist evil for that matter. You don't fight over territory, there's no forced migrations, no genocides, no racism, no slavery*. Yes, natives can get mad and send you packing, but their anger grows mostly in small increments for things like job insecurity, hunger, overpopulation or ... missionaries, I think? And the game is so colourful and bright to boot :-) Going off of Archipelago and not knowing the darker sides of colonialism you'd think it was mostly sunshine and peaches with a bunch of resource deficiencies :-)

Sorry bout the rant. I like Archipelago and too many people seem to feel like the game itself depicts evil when in my opinion it actually shies away from most of the bad stuff.

*you actually do pay the workers, IIRC - you might argue that paying a one-time fee can be seen as slavery, but that is imo just a game mechanism because given the game's economy you couldn't pay that much every turn. Also, who else would you pay the money to, if you're the one who discovered them? :-)

Yeah, actually, your right. It isn't a dark look. It's quite a cheerful look.

I enjoy the game, too. But I can see why some people might not like the theme, even though the mechanics could be about anything. Probably the same people who find Puerto Rico offensive.
