I have hit on an idea for a game wherein Russian scholars are competing in researching byliny by visiting villages and farms in 19 rural Russia. Since I have no artist ability whatsoever, I figured I should be able to find art that is in PD to use for the prototypes once I get the game mechanics worked out.

I was wondering: How does one determine what art is in public domain? Are there good Web sites I should visit? I fear just typing this in google, it seems likely that I will find great art that is not in PD (but perhaps erroneously listed as such).

Thanks in advance!

FWIW when you do a Google image search, you can use "Search Tools" / "Usage Rights" to show only images marked for selected usage rights. Visiting the site hosting a given image, you could presumably often verify whether the label is correct.

Check out Flickr Commons as one potential source. All uploaders to that service have to licence those works as having "No Known Copyright". Other people have also uploaded CC0 or similar works:

eg 'Russia' - CC0/No Known Copyright images:

Have you also looked at Kozzi? It's a Stock Art site whose subscriptions are like $5/month.

Super helpful thread.

Thanks all.

I'm specifically looking for military tanks, planes and boats. Has anyone come across libraries of such images? (Public domain or not)

I'll assume the perfect Google search won't find my needs but figured I'd ask. I'll hit up those links and any others that pop in the thread.
